There is something pathologic about being a fan of the Cubbies. We are more loyal to Wrigley Field than the team. We adore pitchers with broken-arms. And we are always ready for a conversation about the inevitable annual collapse that seems always just around the corner.

So while the Cubs moved into a tie for first last night when Murton, who has been accused of being unable to run, throw, or have the base-running savvy of a Triple-A rookie, crossed the plate on a wild pitch, we life-long Cubs followers are now positioned, once again, for the inevitable heartbreak following a month or so of hope.

Ah well. Root! root, for the Cubbies! They won't win (the pennant), it's a shame! For it's one, two, three goats yer cursed in this old ball game!

1. Try being a Brewers fan
the first season they've even come close since 1982. Only to slip behind the Cubs? ouch.

8. Get with the program Rambis!
You need an extra GO after CUBS!

Go Cubs Go Go Cubs Go
Hey Chicago whatd'ya say
The Cubs are gonna win today!

I actually skipped going to the Brew Met game (had free tix- was gonna 'Voodoo' the brewcrew!) because I couldn't miss the Cub game.

My orange furred cat named Murton was sure proud after the winning run was scored! (I found the lil critter right about the time Murton was called up 2 years ago- the orange sealed his name!)

GO CUBS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

13. Weird- are you sure the certificate wasn't from '82?
I am a charter member of that club and I swear it started in '82. Who knows, I haven't seen my certificate in ages:(

I'd kind of given up on Murt until recently, glad to see my cat's namesake is back in the bigs!

14. Nope 1979
It is a typed Certificate with Ernie Banks and Bob Kennedy GM at the time signatures on it. You got a card to carry in your wallet and a subscription to vine line or the mag available at the time which was handy in the off season when the internets didn't exist.

15. Yes I had all of that. It also came with a lapel pin.
I'm from Iowa so we're always about 3 years behind Chicago!

IIRC the start of the club was the start of Vineline too. I'll have to dig though my old stuff. I don't think any of my DHCFC stuff still exists, but I know I have all the old Vinelines lying around somewhere.

Do check the cert again to make sure I'm not going crazy. Mine said 'Cub fan since '72' because that was the year I was born. The reason I wanna make sure I'm not crazy is because my Cub crazy father died in '81 and I 'thought' that me joining the club came after his passing. But again, I could be wrong!

My friend Tim and I got to see the Cubs for the first time on TV everyday because our town got cable. We used to have to listen to the radio. I just hung the certificate in my son's room we just finished this week. I was remarking on how they most likely had to type it because I don't think they had computer printed stuff back then. I could always bring it to work and scan it:)

20. I'd love to see one again. The cert was hanging on the wall of
my room ever since I was a kid. Mom wasn't much good at keeping my stuff, so who knows where that stuff went. (I always kept my stash of sports and uh 'other' mags tho!)

That club seems to have disappeared into the mist. Can't really find any info on it on the 'net.

9. When I heard that asshat Dick Johnson on the WMAQ news this morning
say that the Cubs had moved into a tie for first place, I put my hands over my ears, and started saying "I can't hear you"...

I lived through 1969, 1984, 1989 and then the worst 2003. Five outs away from going to the World Series and it happened again. Nope, they're not gonna get me this time. I haven't watched a game since that infamous October night in 2003 and I ain't gonna start now.

This 53 year old woman just can't take anymore heartbreak from her beloved Cubs. So not only will I refuse to watch any of their remaining games, I will also not be reading any of the stories about them in any of the Chicago papers. I just cannot get caught up again. It's too traumatic, at least for me...

21. Nah!
Can't be like '69. They were a dominant team all year that year, until August. These Cubs just climbed to the top of the hill in August.

I'm not saying the bubble can't burst. But, it won't be like '69. This year, the worst we can say is that they made a valiant effort to recover from a horrendous start and came up short.

In 1969, that team had World Series written all over it. Now, THAT was a collapse. I remember the continuous sinking feeling everyday, when they would lose another game and the Mets just couldn't stop winning. Bummer!

This year, my only regret is that couldn't have been just .500 for April and May. They'd have about a 7 game lead right now!

From another long time Cubs fan,
GAC

22. We started the year 3-15 in one run games.
We scored waaaaay more runs than we had given up, but had a losing record. It was ugly to watch.

29. It's a journey, all right.
But it's got to turn around sometime, doesn't it? I'm hedging my bets, though (a Cubs fan always does); I've already got a box of Kleenex ready for the inevitable heartbreak.

Kerry Wood is supposed to be reactivated on Friday and he might boost a bullpen that, at least early in the year, had accumulated more losses than the starting pitchers.

It's been a ride.

God, I love baseball.
