2. Thank You! Now Help Spread The Word!!
Phillip Morris sent an email about this...and they put the wrong URL for signing of this petition...they did not include the www in the URL, and so one could not simply click on the link in the email to get where you wanted to go.

So I posted it over here, hoping to get some smokers, like me, to sign on.

15. Your smoking doesn't impact me? Wrong.
If I'm sharing a space with you (or any smoker) and I have to breathe in your second-hand smoke, then your smoking impacts me.

When you're older and have higher medical bills due to your habit and you have to file Medicare claims, as a taxpayer, then your smoking impacts me.

If your support of the tobacco industry ends up getting my kids addicted to cigarettes due to its ruthless advertising and lobbying machine, then your smoking impacts me. (I lost my grandmother to lung cancer due to years of smoking, by the way...)

In a society, we are not completey disconnected individuals, our decisions and actions impact others. And if a higher tax on cigarettes helps to discourage smokers like you from harming me and others that I care about, then I'm all for it.

By the way, since you're a relative newbie, I'll point out that calling someone you disagree with a Freeper is not only against DU rules (hence your deleted posts upthread), but won't earn you a lot of favors around here. Plus, most of us come to the Lounge to get away from the hostility in posts like yours in this thread. If you're looking for a fight, please take it to the GD and GDP forums, it will be more welcomed there. The tone in the Lounge is a lot more relaxed than this.

But I guess I'm on your ignore list now because I disagreed with you. Oh well, welcome to DU anyway.

58. No, You Are Not On My Ignore List
The reason is that, while I disagree with you...YOU DID IT RESPECTFULLY.

I will not tolerate being disrespected and demonized, just because I'm a smoker.

I do my best to avoid anyone sharing the consequensces of my adult decision. I do not smoke in the house, I do not light up around non-smokers (unless I happen to be in a designated smoking area, in which case, you can leave...or hold your breath.)

I do not throw my cigarette butts out the window into the street.

Time some people started recognizing we smokers as humans who have feelings and rights too!! for those of us who do our best not to infringe on YOUR rights..the least you could do is return the favor and not infringe on MY rights!!

24. Higher cigarette taxes = regressive taxation.
Don't like smoking? Try to ban it. But don't increase taxes on cigarettes and call yourself a progressive.

Poor smokers smoke the same number of cigarettes daily as do rich smokers -- the poor just pay a higher percentage of their incomes on tobacco. I don't have a problem with restrictions on smoking in public places -- that is a public health issue. But increasing cigarette taxes is regressive taxation, something all liberals should oppose.

36. I'm not signing the petition.
Edited on Wed Aug-01-07 10:16 AM by whoisalhedges
a) petitions generally amount to nothing
b) I hate the tobacco industry.

That said, regressive taxation, regardless of context, goes against everything I believe in.

Oh, and on edit: I absolutely question the progressiveness of the position that states we should increase cigarette taxes. I do NOT question the progressiveness of trying to drive the tobacco companies out of business; just of taxing poor people more than rich people. It's antithetical to the entire history of progressive movements dating back a hundred years.

I don't think you're a "bad liberal," Lynne -- I just think that shifting the tax burden to the poor contradicts what you believe in.

39. Then FULLY fund smoking cessation programs.
100%. Let smokers who want to quit do so FREE.

Lots of things are optional. Eating at restaurants. Driving. I don't think the poor should bear a greater burden than the rich for those activities, either.

Nicotine, in case you've forgotten, is a highly addictive agent. It's not quite so simple as "I'm gonna quit smoking now!"

44. FWIW...
When cigarette prices go up, poor smokers' buying of cigarettes drops at a greater rate than that of the rich.

So in aggregate, they don't necessarily end up paying a higher percentage of their incomes on tobacco, since consumption drops.

52. Are there available studies to back this up?
I'm not calling you a liar or anything, I just haven't seen any objective, peer-reviewed research. Not to say it can't be out there.

I only have anecdotal evidence. Among the people I know, a far greater percentage of those with low incomes smoke than those with higher incomes. Hell, I know a LOT of dirt-poor people who smoke two packs a day.

Again, anecdotal. I call it like I see it. If you've got something from the New England Journal of Medicine, or a similarly reputable source, I'd give it due credence.

63. Wasn't talking about the percentage who smoke
I'm talking about the impact of higher prices. Which would come from an economic source, not a medical one.

Read carefully. I didn't say the percentage of poor smokers is less than the percentage of rich smokers. I said consumption drops more when prices go up.

72. But does it really?
That's what I'm looking for. It's easy to argue such a thing, but look at other addictive drugs. Do crackheads and junkies stop using in large numbers when prices go up?

I know people who have quit because of health reasons, or because they had a kid. I don't know ANYBODY who quit smoking because of price. Once again, just anecdotal. I haven't seen any studies to suggest anything one way or another.

My consumption hasn't changed a bit due to higher prices. The only thing that has changed is that now I roll my own to save money.

Others switch to cheaper generic brands that are loaded with even more garbage than regular brands. THAT is what happens when the price goes up.

You fail to understand the power of addiction.
