I'm relatively new. Lurked for awhile, then started posting about 3 months ago.

1. I've been here for about a year
and a lot of the true old-timers have bailed.

The board has changed quite a bit. There used to be a lot more long posts with analysis. And the internecine warfare was minimal.

Once the primaries are over we should (hopefully) see a return to a more unified DU.

7. I joined in 1998
There was just a few of us back then but it was peaceful... The board started just around the impeachemnent debacle and it was truly a nice place to visit during that period. I think skinner was about 14 at the time...

5. Essentially here since day one...
I saw the sign on the tv coverage of the inauguration back in January of 2001. I lurked for a while then finally got het up enough to make my first post in the late Spring of 2001. I posted for a while then left the board then came back then left then came back again - apparently to stay this time. :-)

I was rooting for ya! But I was too broke to contribute :-(

I don't remember quite when I joined, but it was shortly after I got my current job, in 2001. I remember that I followed the link from Bartcop, and it looked like a congenial place.

Now I'm old and cranky, and I only come here for the ZombyCoffee.

19. I think I stood next to the first official DUers at the inaugural protest.
There were some folks there with a banner advertising DU (they actually started inching me off the wall I was standing on). I was holding a "Re-Elect Gore in 2004" sign and a friend was holding a sign with a trash can labeled "Ballot box" on it. I'll never forget the rage directed at * and Cheated that day. It was wonderful to be part of such a mass loathing. I didn't start frequenting DU until early 2002 after my mom, a life-long Dem died in December 2001 and I desperately missed my weekly conversation with her about * and the state of our country. My username is in honor of her.

My hubby found it within a month or so of inauguration in 2000. Been here on a regular basis ever since.

But I only lurked in the forums for the first year. I really should stay away all together. The forums consume far too much of my time - but I enjoy so much some of the discussions that take place here.

28. Sometime in February 2001, I think
I wrote an essay for the front page that appeared in March of that year.

Of the early crowd, Crewleader, Indiana Green, Ferretherder, the moosedogs, Astarho, dmr, and maybe half a dozen others are still around.

We used to have two "regular" disrupters. One by the name of Lonster was so clueless that he was almost cute. The other was OSD, which stood for Old School Democrat, and he was constantly taunting us about being a tiny fringe group. "All twelve of you" was one of his favorite phrases.

There used to be a woman named Kali, who single-handedly ran a forum called The Dirt, which was all about political and corporate scandals. However, she got into a dispute with the admins and left.

Who would have thought that DU would still be around today with 38,000 members, and that it would have inspired so many people to activism?

I guess that actually makes me a bit of an old-timer, though it's not reflected by my post count. I'm more of a lurker who goes on an occasional posting spree. Several years back I posted occasionally on the now-defunct TurnLeft website. I had also come across RackJite which led me to Bartcop. During the whole 2000 travesty I discovered Bushwatch and Buzzflash, from which I found the "Top Ten Conservative Idiots" list; I finally registered to post here at DU several months later. Awesome, highly addictive site!

I think anyway . all I know is I didn't sleep from
November 2000 until I found DU and read a New posters
thread titled "The Long Kiss Goodnight" the newbie
was named William Pitt . The thought of ghosts of the founding
fathers and all the past Presidents haunting bush in
the halls of the White House gave me the best night sleep .
In fact if I ever have a Hard time falling asleep this
visualization is all I need to get a good nights rest.

Yes I'm coming up on my three year anniversary .

I've taken less vacation days than bush too,
so you know he's in trouble .

I go through posting spurts, but I'm here every day. I voted for Gore in Broward County, and was sick at heart over the SOTU appointment of Bush*. I felt alone. I couldn't understand why no one else in my real life was as heartbroken as me. Sure there were people who seemed to be unhappy, but I was honestly near being a basket case. When I found DU that day, it became my lifeline, a crisis center of sorts. Finally, I found that I really wasn't alone, that there were others who were as devastated as me. DU then became my educator, I cannot tell you how much I have learned and have grown as a human being. DU changed my life forever in too many ways to explain. DU helps me keep politics and news events in perspective. I have a tremendous amount of respect for DU and our DU community. Thank you to each and every one of you.

i had been active on smirking chimp (under a different SN) but... while it's great for articles, i needed the speed of DU forums

65. March or April 2002
Not long after I heard Trent Lott call Tom Daschle a traitor on live TV. I finally got my head outta my ass and started to pay attention. From RadioLeft reading a Will Pitt essay.

72. Got my password Feb 5, 2001
First came to the website on "inagru-sham" day. Saw the banner.

Did ALOT of reading, learning...those were some hairy early days on these forums!!! Still do alot of reading and learning here daily.

Don't even have 400 posts yet but DSL comes in two weeks then look out.

I remember when khephra came. He did then and still does make a BIG difference to me on these boards. He is always a worthy read. I miss ewing2001 who did a great 9/11 timeline.

Jax

can you believe it I haven't hit a 1,000 yet. It took me 6 months to get like 200 posts.... and I had to compete with my husband for computer time once our child went to bed, Du was quite a bit different then and you felt like you knew so many of the poster's. Now it seems like I only recognize about a quarter of the names..

83. found DU nov/dec 2001... started posting early January 2002.
Wierd day I started posting... a slew of small planes crashed... we were all still a bit skitterish... did it mean anything? I think there were four crashes. But Duers are resourceful - found stats on small plane crashes and quickly learned that while not common - it was not statistically significant (abnormal). I think, but am not sure, that the final crash (after several others) was the teenager who flew a plane into a building in florida.

For some reason, the whole thing was so riveting - but eerie - that it sucked me into posting.. and I haven't quit since.

Still only have about 730 posts in that time. I use the board as a primary source of news and unfiltered info. The computer at work is unable to reach DU because of blocking software. I'd have more postings if it weren't for that.

Well, that ole Texacutioner's got the whole WORLD concerned, as DUer's well know, as they have a smattering of members from all over the WORLD.

That's a definite compliment to DU , but GeeDubya should be ashamed that so many other people, countries, and continents are concerned about his behavior.

Thanx to DU 4 bein' U !

Auntie Pinko is a family friend, told my mother about it, mom told me. I was, goodness, 15 at the time. I had about 200 posts before I got to college (and a LAN cable) in September. I'm and "old" poster, but a quiet one.

93. Lurker since June 2002, poster since March 2003.
The lead up to the IWR had me frantically searching for other lost souls with whom to commisserate. Found a link to DU through googling the words "liberal voice" at the library, June 2002. A bunch of Freeper posts popped up complaining about somethin called "DU."

In the time since I started posting, DU has made me late for work approximately 120 times; I can't tear myself away from the computer most days. Oh, and the lost hours of sleep, oy gevalt....

105. was told about this site over the summer
by a nice person I met when I stated that I was over 40 and still a liberal. Finally got up the courage to post in November 2003. It is always enlightening and fun too. It is good to know there are so many people who are disturbed about the state of the country and working to make changes.

I really enjoy this site. I find it helpful to get an insight on other people's views and consider it a great learning tool. I'm a newcomer to the whole political spectrum. While I've always voted, i never really was aware of politics, never watched it on TV and hated discussions on subject. Thanks in part to DU, I'm hooked on politics and I'm always watching the news or reading papers, blah blah.

One thing though is that 99.365 % of the people on here are great and supportive but I think some use the # of posts as a power trip. Just b/c someone has only 27 posts and one has 6348 doesn't mean much to me. I was just late in finding out about this site but it shouldn't be held against me or anyone else. The number of posts shouldn't make us less qualified to make a statement. Thanks for letting me babble and once again the site and all of you are great.
