This sounds like a stupid question, but if someone specifies
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 03:42 PM by LaraMN
that I should "place only one space between sentences" in a document, they're just asking me to single-space the whole thing, right? For some reason, I'm confusing myself...

1. Could mean one space after the period, rather than the old typewriter rule of two spaces.
Some places where I've worked made that specification in the style manual.

5. Ohhh! I didn't think of that!
The instructions read:

"...using single-spaced,12 pt, Times New Roman. Please place only one space between sentences and denote new paragraphs with an indent rather than a hard return between paragraphs..."

It already specifies single-spacing, so they probably DO mean between sentences in the latter reference, huh?

22. They mean one space after a period, not two like your old typing class
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 04:32 PM by gmoney
If you're preparing text for publication, the standard is one space after a period. Like that. It's standard typography style, same with a single indent instead of blank line between paragraphs or blank line AND and indent.

If you really want to impress them, do NOT indent the first paragraph of a document or chapters.

20. I hate that. I'm so used to double spacing after a period, I'm not sure my fingers
could get used to do it any other way. I know that on some message board forums, it will automatically format as one space, even if you double space.

2. Usually, 'single space' refers to line spacing.
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 03:45 PM by Richardo
And yes, word processors automatically separate sentences so you need only put one space between the period and the start of the next sentence. (For you kids out there: In typing classes, for typewriters, most of us were taught to put two spaces between sentences.)

13. How do I find two spaces?
I tried, and it's like searching for nothing.

3. Some styles specify 2 spaces between the period and the
beginning of the next sentence. Unless I'm told otherwise, I always put 2 spaces. It's good that they tell you.

11. Just do a search and replace.
Search for two spaces, and replace with one.

Easy.

4. Hit the space bar once after a period
For a long time the convention was to hit it twice to make it easier to read with older typefaces. Seriously.

8. I still do it the "old" way!
Is it typical now to only put one space?

10. No, I'm sure it's talking about just one space after periods, instead of 2.
2 was the old style. It looks really dumb now, though, with proportional fonts.

24. I bet you aren't the only one that was confused by that
When I took my medical transcription classes is when I'd learned it had changed, it was really hard to get over hitting the spacebar twice after sentences and we get graded down on any little thing like that that is off. I took typing back in the stone age and I didn't even know they'd changed the rule.
