"I can't fault the kids, because they just want to keep busy," said Alderman Joe Davis, whose district includes several intersections where children sell bottled water. "But for me, the safety hazard is with them standing in the median with so much traffic."

Davis has asked police to warn children that they can sell drinks on sidewalks but not from medians or in streets. Officers also have the option of fining the young entrepreneurs: $75 for selling from medians, and $58.60 for selling in the road.

The children who sell water say they understand the risks, but they can make money faster and easier than at other jobs - and that's assuming they're old enough to work legally.

DeMarco, 10, said he can earn as much as $90 for five hours of work on a hot day. Other children said they earn anywhere from half to twice as much by buying the water at discount stores.

1. You've got it all wrong.

Kids get the sympathy/awww isn't the little one precious money. You've got to have access to some kid you can put to work then you be their enforcer and make sure nobody messes with their turf. I need to call my 12 yr old sister and let her know her summer camp plans are canceled.

carried cinderblocks and buckets of gravel for 8 hours
in 100-degree direct sun for $32.50 a day.
