I have to throw everything I know about western music out the window
I play a little guitar, bass, mandolin, piano, dulcimer, ukulele, dobro, harmonica, banjo and a few other things, but I am not very good at any of them..lol. I've faked it all for many years.

Recently I am trying out a new instrument, the sitar. Let me tell ya, it is a lot different than any other instrument I have fiddled with. Oh yeah, I have some fiddles too... but those are *really* out there. How the hell????

Indian music is really far out and you have to get rid of any western music ideas you may have.

So...who else plays sitar here? We need a sitar group at DU.

I want one of those soon. I have kept an eye out for one, but haven't brought one home. Do you play it?

4. Yeah, a bit
I could already play piano, so picking it up was no biggie. Got it for less than $100 in India. :)

9. Plays exactly like a piano does
Except that the more notes you press at once, the harder you have to pump the bellows, otherwise there isn't enough pressure to sound all the reeds. I noticed that Indian players tend not to play more than three notes at once, and often they only play melodies using a single note at a time.

19. One of my musician buddies would weight down the keys of his harmonium with fishing weights
to accompany himself on viola.

They are nice sounding instruments.

5. I tried Pedal Steel for a while
I thought I knew the guitar...sheesh!

Double guitar with different tunings (E9 for the main and C-something for the other) and pedals that change the tuning on the fly.

6. It's sort of embarrassing
Guitar is really cool and all, but it really is such an easy instrument to play. Once you start to branch out, it is a real eye-opener to figure out what it takes to play other things.

Not that I have anything bad to say about guitar, it's not a bad instrument, but it is like water-color to art when it comes to other instruments.

Of course, I suck at guitar too...lol. But I have heard more "great" guitar players in my life than I care to remember.

8. That's the thing about Guitar and Piano
Great instruments to flesh out whatever is musically inside you.

Pedal Steel sounds amazing when played right. But that's not as easy to do as, say, a Fender Strat. With the right pedals, any ok guitar player can sound like a Rock God.
