30. More Maine groups I enjoy
They're more in the folk/rock category I guess:

Schoonerfare: http://www.schoonerfare.com/

Devonsquare: http://free.napster.com/view/artist/index.html?id=12075620

County Down: I can't find a thing on these ladies. They were together when I was a littler girl. At least 1 is still in the area, maybe two. If you ever find their albums holler because I want a new copy. Can't find my mom's original tape.

7. New Grass Revival!!!!
The greatest. band. ever. Now defunct (for which Bela Fleck is going to hell!!!!!).

I love everything they ever did. For some Celtic flavored stuff, listen to "County Clare."

Word is that they broke up because Sam (Bush) got tired of playing Bela's "Irish sh*t every night."

9. Green Party Voter, You have to check out the Rankin Family from Cape Breton!
I found them on a Chieftain's CD, Tears of Stone and they are fantastic. They are all members of the same family although one of them, John Morris Rankin died about six years ago. I believe they are back in the recording studio and are planning to release a new CD. I really like them and I am pretty sure you, and other Celtc/Bluegrass fans will too. Here is a sample from YouTube and a link to an excellent album of theirs that I own. Check out some of the song samples. Enjoy!

16. You must be thinking of someone else. I haven't seen them do any step dancing
Cape Breton is definitely one place I want to go in Canada. And I want to make sure I can see the Rankins when I am there. I know that if, and when, I get to heaven, the angels will sound exactly like the Rankin sisters!

what you've been missing, try streaming these radio stations online:

Americana stations are where all the good music is these days. You may never listen to local, commercial radio again. Enjoy!

Music from 'O Brother' with the original artists done at the Ryman auditorium in Nashville. Alison Krauss was one of the singers in the 'sirens' segment of 'O Brother'. It's a great DVD.

there are several clips out there that I have seen - I shall look for them

Bluegrass - look for Kruger Brothers - Jens Kruger is arguable the best bluegrass banjo player in the world today - and his brother Uwe a terrific guitar player . . . I will post some of their clips also

I don't listen to much intrumental stuff as a rule but Donal Clancy Tony and John Renbourn are exceptions to the rule. I would throw Leo Kottke in there too.

36. Kruger is competent but hardly "the best"
Geez, JD Crowe is still playing! Jim Mills has as solid a right hand as there is. Rob McCoury is vastly underrated as a banjo player.

Oh, and The Earl is still alive and pickin'.

23. Rhonda Vincent and the Rage are better, imho
Edited on Tue May-15-07 11:50 PM by idgiehkt
I like Allison Krauss and Union station but they seem to like to do really slow songs with fine harmony and that gets boring after a while to me. Rhonda Vincent and the Rage are more consistently up-tempo and engaging. But Allision Kraus is a legend, no doubt.

This is the only song on youtube worth posting, it's a nice one and her mandolin playing is great, Dolly is in this too

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIUU1zDW68g

here is some of them live, it shows how kick-ass her band is, they are top notch, but the sound on her mike is poor
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbqHnqh8Crg&mode=related&search=

When I think bluegrass this is what I think of, really up-tempo, whereas AK seems to like those old super-slow songs that are more like hymns

Oh. my. God.

this is my favorite Rhonda song, it brings tears to my eyes. FINALLY ON YOUTUBE. woohoo.

24. Depends on my mood. Right now I am digging the quiet stuff. I enjoy
the haunting ethereal Clannad/Enya sound so Alison's voice is wonderful to me.

But in the daytime I am loving the fast stuff. Been listening to Earl Scruggs' breakdowns a lot.

Will check into Rhonda and the rage tomorrow. Thanks for the tip.

But without researching it, I don't know their names. They
have done some backup singing for Clannad, so the album
notes should say who and how many.
