The Steelers' old "new" uniforms.
This is the throwback uniform the Steelers will wear for two games to commemorate their 75th season. As much as I dig the whole throwback uniform trend, I don't know if picking retro unis from one of the Steelers' worst periods is a good way to usher in the Tomlin era.

1. They're based on the Steelers' 1962 uniforms.
That was the first year they affixed the Steelmark logo on one side of their helmets.

2. The reason the Steelers put the logo on one side of the helmet,
was so fans could decide which they liked- with or without the logo. The Steelers made the playoffs that year, and so, out of superstition, they decided to stay with the one-sided logo idea.

3. Ironically, Republic Steel of Cleveland suggested the use of the logo.
The Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers have one of the oldest rivalries in the NFL.

than on the field.

Maybe they'll bring back Kent Nix and Brady Keys.

7. They switched to black after adopting the helmet logo.
They figured the black helmets would make the logo stand out.

represent the three items that make up steel- yellow for coal, orange (now red) for ore, and blue for steel scrap.

10. The Steelers used to be known as the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Art Rooney changed the name in 1940 to avoid confusion with the baseball team.

Named the 'Pirates'.

Were there a lot of pirates living in Pittsburgh at one time?

12. They were originally known as the Alleghenies,
but in their early years, they made a habit of stealing away the best talent from other, less successful teams. Hence the nickname Pirates.

He did a goodwill tour of the country shortly after the Steelers' Super Bowl XL victory. His mother is originally from Korea.

17. The Steelers have only officially retired one jersey number.
Ernie Stauntner's 70.

Other numbers, like Joe Greene's 75, Terry Bradshaw's 12 and Jerome Bettis' 36, have been taken out of ciculation but not officially retired.

31. Similar to the Red Sox
They have a riddiculously strict policy on number retirements (must be in Hall of Fame, must finish career with club, etc), which means that some obvious people like Jim Rice, Dwight Evans, and Johnny Pesky are excluded. They managed to get around the rules by giving Carlton Fisk a do-nothing job with the team after he retired.

36. This is an NFL marketing tool
Every year they have one or two games where teams play in "throwback" jerseys from years gone by so they can sell said jerseys, caps, jackets etc. to fans. Its all about $$$$. At least their not as bad as NASCAR, yet.

37. The Steelers are the only sixth-seeded playoff team to win the Super Bowl.
They won all three games on the road in 2005, which is why they wore white jerseys in the SB despite being the designated home team. In professional football, the road team traditionally wears white jerseys in a game.
