Lawyer says church had 'a duty' to catch woman
Jurors begin to hear case of 'slain in the Spirit' fall

Lansing State Journal

CHARLOTTE - A church member ostracized, a threat of 24-hour surveillance and accusations of slander highlighted opening arguments Monday in the case of a woman suing her former pastor and church.

Judith Dadd says she was injured nearly five years ago during a service at Mount Hope Church in Delta Township after being "slain in the Spirit" - where church members sway or collapse to the floor while praying.

Dadd, who is seeking unspecified damages in excess of $25,000, claims she went to the altar during the July 18, 2002, service and was overcome by the "Spirit of the Lord." Trained ushers at the 4,000-member church should have been there to catch her, as they had in the past, said one of her attorneys, Richard Rashid, during opening arguments.

"There was a duty to catch her when she fell," Rashid said.

I'm telling you, if I were God, the only reason I would keep humans around would be comic relief.
