but yes, he'd still be as popular. It has much to do with his "f*ck you writing" to an entire country that wanted to pretend that America was just like "Leave It To Beaver". He was the voice of a real America that wasn't being allowed to talk because it wasn't "pretty" enough for the mainstream.

That's appealing whether his name was Jack Kerouac or Sal Paradise.

If he'd been Bill Jones, his life would have been different, and might not have become the writer he was. Look how many writers you can refer to simply by last names, without chance of confusion...
