Who would be in your ideal rock band?
Edited on Mon Jan-12-04 07:41 PM by RandomKoolzip
Imagine if you could create your own all-star rock group, selecting members from your favorite outfits....Let's imagine what your ideal band would consist of, choosing from a pool of musicians from any era, live or dead. Remember, this is YOUR choice for the IDEAL imaginary rock band - don't just say "The Beatles," or whatever. The one rule I'd use here is to stick to "standard" rock band form:

Here's my first choice:

Drums: John Bonham
Bass: Tina Weymouth
Rythym Guitar: Richard Lloyd
Lead Guitar: Frank Zappa
Lead Vocalist: Phil Lynott
Keyboards: Ben Folds
Songwriter: Robert Pollard

Runner up all star group:

Drums: Vinnie Coliauta
Bass: Aston "Family Man" Barrett
Rythym Guitar: Nile Rodgers
Lead Guitar: Tom Verlaine
Lead Vocalist: John Lennon
Keyboards: Allen Ravenstine
Songwriter: John Lennon

See, isn't that fun? C'mon, somebody waste some time with me.....

1. Nice Frank Pic.
Put the old Frank on Guitar.
The later day Frank would have hung up the axe and conducted.

Cheers

3. Frank's best years for soloing were 82 and 88, IMO.....
Had he lived, he'd still be mangling that whammy bar like it was a radioactive snake aiming its fangs at his throat. Best Guitar soloist EVER.

53. Richard Lloyd is one of my guitar hero's.
I try to emulate his style. I've even been told by other players, "Hey, do that Richard Lloyd thing you do."

I really like his playing on Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend" album. Richard Lloyd & Robert Quine together. Heaven.

Unless....was he palying guitar on his solo albums? Hmmmmm.....And Tom Araya was Slayer's bassist...Kerry King was their git-fiddler.

Anyways, nice off the wall choices! Kirsty Maccoll and Roli Mosimann!

...Now I have to go and look it up if I can find my copy of "Commercial Suicide"

I'd get Steve Lillywhite to produce, by the way. I figure we'd get a break, what with giving his wife a job, and all...

on edit: Yeah, Kerry King (or Jeff Hanneman, for that matter).

Of course, it's a given that whoever plays lead, MUST play a "V".

Btw Random, I can't play this just now, I'm listening to a Lee Coombs essential mix and am in no way mentally able to think in terms of RAWK. ;)

I'll pass along any flashes of genius should they materialize, but I don't recommend holdin' yo' breaf.

but its fun to think about:

keyboards: Manfred Mann

My ideal band - no, they would mix together horribly. 4 huge egos. 4 very diverse styles. AN incredibly interesting LP, hell yeah. Dead doesn't count, right?

19. I dunno if this would be a permanent band, but:
I always wanted to be filthy rich so I could produce unbelievable recording sessions. And the one I had in mind for the longest time went something like this:

Guitar: Robert Fripp (King Crimson)
Bass: Janik Top (Magma)
Drums: Jerome Cooper (Revolutionary Ensemble and other free jazz)
Saxophones: Anthony Braxton

It would be the ultimate weedy-intellectuals-with-glasses band, all about weird tonalities and odd time signatures, and I figured even if they didn't get along musically they could have one hell of a chess tournament.

Sometimes what you want to hear happens anyway. Once upon a time, the composing bass player from Henry Cow, my then favorite band, came over from England to Woodstock NY and recorded an album at Michael Mantler and Carla Bley's studio, using them and some of their friends, and the words were written by one of my favorite songwriters on earth. The record was called Kew. Rhone. (the periods are part of the title) and I was obsessed with that record for one terrific year.

21. Oooh, Henry Cow. I love Dagmar Krause.....
Hell, I love that whole RIO movement, and all the Cuneiform bands, too.I was obsessed with Hatfield and the North's first album, especially "Let's Eat (Right Now)".

Another line-up for the ultimate weedy-intellectuals-with-glasses band:

Vocals: Peter Hammill
Guitar: Fred Frith
Bass: Pip Pyle
Drums: Andrew Cyrille
Sax: Lol Coxhill
Keys: Keith Tippett
Composer: Cornelius Cardew

And Pip was the drummer! Richard Sinclair was Hatfield's bass player (and he's supposed to do an American tour in May; PM me if you want details) but he didn't wear glasses either; did you mean Hugh Hopper?

Gotta go now, my own band is about to rehearse... but I'll happily blather on about RIO and Canterbury some other time!

37. All right, another Weymouth fan!
She's my favorite bassist. As a bassist myself, she's my biggest influence; always leaves a lot of space in her playing, and her lines are always angular but tasteful...her equivalent on the drums would be Can's Jaki Leibzeit.

And Phil Rudd! Cool! He's another one of my faves. Underrated because he never plays fills, but very few drummers can play as economically and HARD as Rudd.

47. Thinking With One Brain
That is the ultimate goal of any band serious about the music, right?

You've got that nailed with your lineup.

Now, me, i'll play keyboards, Joe Satriani on guitar, Reeves Gabrels on guitar, Tony Levin on bass, and Stewart Copeland on drums. (Wayne Shorter will sit in on sax and Sheila E. on percussion for a few songs, too.)

With that lineup it won't matter if they're on the same page with me. I'll just listen closely and go with whomever is doing something cool.
