2. I have been looking at them off and on for years
these were Meiji, but I think I'll go have a look to see some other ones.

What was fascinating about these were the changes in his style over 20-40 years and the effect they likely had on the impressionists, water colorists and even comic book art. I couldn't look at some of them without being reminded as well of some of the best comic book artists.

Fascinating. :hi:

3. Weren't all these kinds of pieces
done using wood block? I find it fascinating and can't figure out how they lay the different colors. They must wait for each layer to dry?

4.  yes, they were mostly wood block prints and had some wood blocks to look at
I think they would carve them, then apply the dye or other media, and then glue them to the paper or what have you. And they would have to do this many, many times for the different effects. They had to have a reference mark on the block to know where it should go.
Some of em looked like water colors. It was astounding.

They would also apply mica for glitter and shine, and some type of invisible carvning technique, to get a carving with no color technique. I'm blanking on what it was called. the link I posted might have some definitions. There were many.

7. The prints of Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) aren't too shabby, either

6. Gorgeous!
I love Japanese art in general and woodblock painting in particular. Such delicate and seemingly simple, yet sublime and deep.

The Frick really needs to change it's web address, though. Maybe frickartletsdance.com is still available.

8. Beautiful!
I'm more a fan of black&white hanging scrolls, like Shen Zhou (Chinese,1300s), and Bunsei (Japanese, 1400s)
