while it was odd - and it wasn't clear whether the person had much (any/all) responsibility for the rumours (and rereading it I remember both taking it face value AND being skeptical simultaneously - as in - respond on face value but keep reading with skepticism) - it seemed to be significant that the Admin had allowed it (as in they knew the original poster and found that person legit enough to have a sock puppet and allow that thread.) Bringing it back up 15+ months later - seems to sorta play to and confirm the paranoia that the OP expressed. All that said, the person may be an a** in real life - but let that play itself out in real life rather than here.

Just my two cents.

Per memorable threads I would put Oscar - and 'the first seven days of DU' above this one.

I would guess the first (due to the length of time) but I may be harsh - but it is part of a tone in the lounge that has pushed me out of what was once my favorite forum at DU (imagine finding GD more welcoming than the louneg? odd, but true).

I would hope instead of confirming my biased view that this is more a thread per the fascination with a thread that was odd/interesting/peculiar enough to garner memory and reference (ala the Oscar thread).

A late (deceased, not tombstoned) Duer described the tenor of the lounge as "like a middle school cafeteria". One can describe that description as moralizing... or as descriptive. Choice of the reader (who of course can chose any other way of reading it.)

and had mixed feelings then... 15 months ago. But with all the interesting threads to revive of the Lounge's Six year + experience... reviving it is rather... well confirming of why many have come to view the lounge to be as caustic as GD. Which is odd - as I can attest that years ago the two forums were not equally as requiring really thick skins to survive.

There are tons of interesting/peculiar threads to revive. Choosing one that brings pain and shame to another DUer (even if that pain and shame is warranted - in the OT it isn't really clear that the person had no responsibility for the reactions/rumours) - wasn't a normal means of discourse in the lounge in the early years. Ridicule was reserved for making fun of other forums (or is it fora?) - not for specific Duers.

While I don't ascribe the "golden days" of DU that sometimes gets expressed (ala we are all crazy now - but it wasn't crazy and flame throwing years ago... IT WAS!) - the tone of the lounge has changed over time. There used to be more of a balance between snark (at other DUers) and community. Sometimes it seems as if Snark (at other DUers - esp if one isn't a part of whatever group is the current most common p0osting group) is core of the commmunity in the Lounge. Wasn't always this way.

But hey - I read that I am moralizing - and thus, by suggestion, should be dismissed - so whatever... eh? (See you in GD where I may not be responded to, but I am rarely summarily dismissed... has nothing to do with "me" ala salin - and much more to do with the tone, imo, of the individual forums.)

I don't think this remembrance will do any real harm, keeping in mind the anonymity of the sockie. Also, if I remember, TempSock had a good attitude towards the rather snarky reaction his/her thread got, so perhaps that's another reason why I'm not too worried about this thread causing distress. I think people get confused about the snark behavior increasing because as more and more DUers are around, the snark and the controversy tends to get magnified a bit--people are more interested it seems in bombthrowing than reasoned disagreement. The behavior is the same, however--there's just more people to engage in it. :D
