Where's the BEST hotdog from?
I'm a New Yorker so I've had plenty - the one at Nathan's at Coney Island on my last birthday was memorable but I think the best I've had is at Papaya King on 86th st.

How about you - where are the best dogs found?

1. I say any Nathan's hot dog.
Although having one at Coney Island definitely adds to the experience.

The only dogs I buy for BBQing are Nathan's.

14. Estilo Sonora!
● The bun. Sonoran hot dogs call for a bigger bun than the standard American hot dog holder. In addition to being larger, the bread itself is more substantial - think of the texture and heft of a Parker House roll. They are sold whole, not sliced.
El Güero Canelo gets its buns from Alejandro's; several other local Mexican bakeries also produce the special rolls.
Another difference appears when the cook slices the Sonoran-style bun. Instead of slicing most of the way through, the cook cuts on one side, forming a pocket in a bun, rather than two bun halves held together by a flap. This helps keep all the ingredients safely ensconced in the bun, not dripping down your shirt.
Then the buns go into a steamer until serving time.

● The dog. El Güero Canelo uses plain ol' John Morrell all-beef franks that come eight to a 1-pound package. Each of the dogs is wrapped - and "wrapped" means swaddled end-to-end - in slices of bacon. Contreras says he has one worker who spends most of his time just wrapping dogs. Hundreds of the encased franks rest in plastic tubs in the restaurant cooler.
When a customer orders a dog, the cook places the wrapped wiener on a hot grill, turning it frequently, for about four minutes. The bacon largely melts away, but leaves a lot of flavor, particularly at El Güero Canelo, where the dogs cook in pans that hold them snuggled in sizzling bacon grease.

● Assembling. Using tongs, Contreras places a cooked wiener inside the pocket of a warm bun. The bun goes in a paper holder. Then come the goodies, in order: a tablespoon of plain whole (not refried) pinto beans, a tablespoon of grilled onions, then - and Contreras deftly scoops all these things with ordinary kitchen tongs - a grilled hot yellow pepper goes on the side. He adds a tablespoon of fresh chopped onions and about 2 tablespoons of chopped tomatoes. He puts down the tongs, and turns to squeeze bottles. From them, he lays down multiple lines of jalapeño sauce (a secret recipe made by puréeing three kinds of peppers in a blender), mayonnaise and mustard.

22. The Flying Weenie-Cedar Rapids, Iowa
No, that's not a slur on Bush and Air Force 1..It's a hot dog stand in downtown Cedar Rapids. The owner has a pilot's license and flies to Chicago a couple times a week. He brings back Vienna Beef hot dogs and serves them up Chicago Style with hand cut fries on the side. They also have killer gyros there and Italian Beef sandwiches.

With the grit and grime and trash of Bourbon Street about, the smell of urine and puke wafting in the air, served from a cart which hasn't been washed since the 50's by an old man one step away from homelessness who hasn't shaved in a week, with a hint of alcohol on his breath; and young men just a few feet away tempting tourist gals from Omaha to show him their breasts for a few beads. Incredibly charming.

(I generally like hot dogs, as you might guess).

Right now in LA, though, no one is making a large, thick-skinned, spicy, tasty hot dog, like the ones many shops used to make about 20 years ago.

52. The Chicago dog and the NY dog are completely different animals, though...
the NY dog has saurkraut and pickled hot peppers.

The Chicago dog has tomato wedges, both a dill pickle spear and sweet pickle relish, yellow mustard, and celery salt — and never, ever ketchup.

So, the two are vastly different styles.

67. Must be because I never have onions.
Street vendors of "dirty water dogs" are not the best example of a great NY dog. If you run across a store that specializes in dogs it's light years above the street vendors.

74. I'm pretty sure that they use Zweigle hot dogs
I don't go to Nick Tahoe's very often -- I do like them, though. We usually buy our own wienie's and pop them on the grill.

85. There was a NY Times article a few years ago
I don't remember exactly when. In any case, it revealed that pretty much every hot dog vendor in the city--all the papayas, the ball parks, the street vendors, almost all use the exact same hot dog. I guess it's all in the way they cook them. They definitely use a real cow intestinal casing for the snap.

inside each location where they cook the dog right in front of you as you're in line. I've never been in any of the locations where there wasn't a decent line of people waiting for their dogs! They get their dogs from a local supplier, and offer a beef-dog alternative for those keeping Kosher, or if they're just not into pork products...
