Got on the bus this afternoon and heard a voice I had not heard for 24 years say my name.
Old friend with whom I had shared many good times. She was down from Seattle visiting a boyfriend in this area, and was busing back up to Union Station to catch a train.

We had had some fun back in Missoula in the early 80s, with a load of other young Modernist hedonists. I gave her a hug tonight. She is looking fantastic.

We laughed about what we are doing now and what, to spite youthful delusions, had become of our lives so far.

"We were so stupid!" she yelled, just as loud as in the old days. "We thought we knew everything!"

"We did know everything, at least for five minutes," I said.

She had always been great fun. I had met her outside the show of Missoula, Montana's second punk rock band, and got into an argument with her about the quality of their music. She became a great friend and companion, going to various headache-inducing parties, ingesting all manner of substances with me (acid, mushrooms, cocaine, whatever else happened along that same evening), popping butyl nitrate capsules under my nose, commiseratin', going fully stoned to French and German cinema classes together, collaborating on various failed and successful art projects with me and others, being the loud, blunt girl who would always step over the line. When I had a band, she sat on the right PA speaker and brutally kicked away anybody who slammed or pogoed within reach of her. She drew blood. She has many wild stories from her later years, but they are all her own.

How great to see her again. After half a lifetime, I think we'll kick this friendship back into gear.
