Started Physical Therapy again today.
The current round is going to be 3 times per week for the next 8 weeks.

I'm usually very sceptical of Physical Therapists. So few of them seem to be very good. But I seem to have found a good place and a good therapist this time.

Today was the range of motion and range of strength tests. I can barely stand right now. But this guy paid attention to the history and he's making the connections between what's happening in my back, and my knees, and my feet. He's not just running through the standard motions. He's not trying to give me excersizes for one area that will stress another. This looks like it's going to work.

Yay! This is good news two days in a row. :woohoo:

Even with Insurance though, this is damned expensive. I know where every spare penny is going for the next 8 weeks. It's worth it, but it's still outrageous. :(

1. I've had good luck with physical therapists
I've only gone to 2 different places but they both seemed very good, particularly the most recent. They treat a lot of athletes and do seem to pay close attention to how the entire body is being used.

I finished up my last round last week and feel really good. I've continued to do my exercises at home and it's actually got me so enthused about exercising that I've added things like crunches and upper body work. So maybe I'll actually get in some kind of decent shape.

Well worth it when it works.

4. That's awesome.
Congratulations on your recovery. :)

If all goes well I'll be back on a cane instead of walking with crutches. If I can get that mobility back I'm planning to get back into better shape too. It's time to stop the middle aged spread. :)

6. We can share horror stories sometime.
I've been in and out of PT since I was 24. I've learned to be very sceptical and careful with physical therapy. :)

8. I'm glad to hear this guy is using a full body approach to rehab...
I'm an Athletic Trainer so my field overlaps with PT quite often (we're quite skeptical of physical therapists as well, but that's more of a turf war issue :P) and one of the first things they taught us was that all body parts affect one another. I know when I'm rehabbing my athletes I don't just focus on the injury I work on the whole upper body or lower body...they are much less likely to develop bad exercise technique or even repetitive stress type injuries.

But I'm glad you are doing better!

11. You're all evil.
You all get trained to inflict great pain with smiles on your faces. :P

12. I hope so. I figured out the budget for the next eight weeks
and it's not going to be fun. :(

But every penny I can squeeze is worth it if I can ease the pain and walk with just the cane again. So, yes, I'm definitely hanging in. :)

14. I think the skill & intelligence of a physical therapist makes all
the difference in response to treatment. I hope it does for you, Thom.

15. Compassion too. My first PT obviously didn't care. It was just
a job for him. So even though he was obviously very smart he was a horrible PT. (and I heard that he went to med school and he's now an Orthopedist who hates his patients)

My current PT seems to genuinely like what he does, and he empathizes with his clients.

16. Yes, that is true, with any type of caregiver.
Unfortunately some of these people don't think they are paid well enough to add compassion to the rest of the service they provide.
