PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Joey Porter, the vocal pass-rushing linebacker, was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday.

The 29-year-old Porter, who was in the final year of his contract, had been the starting right outside linebacker since 2000, the year after he was drafted by the Steelers.

Porter was to receive a $1 million bonus on March 6, and was due to earn $4 million in 2007.

"It's a business decision that was made," Steelers spokesman Dave Lockett said.

Porter played 122 games and made 106 starts. His 60 quarterback sacks rank fourth in team history.

The Steelers also released injured running back Verron Haynes and offensive tackle Ulish Booker, who spent the 2006 season on the reserve/injured list.

I wonder who'll pick him up now?

2. news like this makes me giddy that the niners have a ton of cap space
49ers have 40 million lying around and are looking for defensive guys to spend it on. If we can get guys like porter or nate clement and/or asante samuel, look out! Maybe we can even get joe Horn now that he was cut by the saints!

3. But aren't the current 49ers owners incompentent
From what I've heard a few years ago the current ownership makes Al Davis seem sane.

4. well yeah, but i think they've either seen the light or the GM has a ton of power
ESPN's been talking about how the niners are going after guys like clement, samuel, stallworth, and others. heck for all I know, they've just been waiting and working to get enough cap space to make some moves again. And now that we've got Gore, Davis, and a maturing Smith, we could really make a run with some defensive upgrades.

5. I like the coach and how he wore that suit for that one game
I think he should do that more often.
