Please send out good doggie vibes!
Winston is in the doggie hospital again. :(

My yorkie, Winston, is now at the vets with a catheter and being given fluids and antibiotics because he has acute pancreatitis.

After having dinner with friends, the friend that cooked the meal sent me home with a doggie bag of steak scraps. I thought I was giving him treats, I had no idea that the grizzly/fatty parts of the steak were bad for dogs. Heck, according to my vet, cooked hamburger can make them sick too.

I hate that I'm responsible for him being so sick. He knew when we pulled up at the vet's that where we were and he didn't want to go inside. I had to deal with the pitiful sad eyes that were caused by his pancreatitis and his fear of the vets. I hated to have to leave him. I'm a bad owner.

He can use all the good vibes you all can send out his way.

thanks :(

I wouldn't think that one meal of fatty steak would give a dog pancreatitis. We used to feed our dog that stuff all the time.

the fatty/rich stuff.

I do appreciate the hugs and I'm sure Winston does too, he so loves to be cuddled.

I don't think you made him sick. Dogs can eat almost anything. Dogs in the wild would eat raw meat all day. Don't beat yourself up.

I hope he gets well soon. I like yorkies.

15. It is so confusing, I thought the same thing.
There are some folks now just feeding their dogs raw meats and vegetables and they swear their dogs are healthier. Maybe it was cooking the meat and breaking down all the fats to greasy stuff, I don't know?

I do appreciate your good wishes. Yorkies are great dogs, so sweet and smart and loving.

17. It was cooked.
I know it sounds weird, but when I brought him in this morning, after the vet examined him, she called me and the first thing she asked me was if I had given him any hamburger or steak.

I've never heard of such and since her diagnosis, I've done some internet research and sure enough there are articles about it.

Thanks so much for the good wishes. :hi:

They are still treating with IV fluids and antibiotics. Nurse/assistant said he seemed to be a little more energetic today. They are hoping for the best (she said that - made me cringe). So he isn't out of the woods, but he is better.

28. He is being kept at the vet's.
They inserted a catheter, have him on an IV for fluids and antibiotics.

His numbers were so high today after the blood work, she said his pancreas was pretty inflamed and enlarged. When I called to check on him this evening before they shut down for the night, they said he was still very lethargic.

I'm sure he will be better after their care. I just hate it that he is sick and stuck at the vets. :(

thanks so for the good vibes. :hi:

I didn't know that about the food. What did the ancestral dogs eat, you know? The same thing. We used to feed our dogs that kind of stuff all the time and nothing ever happened. Well I guess now you'll be doing Science Diet, Iams or similar products. It sounds like your dog has a very sensitive system. I hope he gets better fast. Can you call during the night? IS it a 24 hour place? I hope he gets better and soon. Good luck. I know how it is with having your beloved little pets in overnight for serious stuff. Terrifying.

I'm going to try to get by there early in the morning, before I go to work, just to check on him.

The "meat is not good for your dog" news was startling to me, I'm thinking that maybe it is cooked meat, as if it is broken down to greasy unhealthy stuff. I dunno.

thanks again for the good wishes

That reminds me, he was feeling so sick this morning, the cat that came to check him out in the vets office didn't bother him one bit. Normally he would be trying to get the cat, but this morning he just laid there on the counter. The vet has her two cats roaming free in her clinic, he didn't pay them any attention, he just stared at me with very sad eyes. :(

59. My little guy is still in the steel kennel at the vets. :(
I talked with the vet, my poor little guy is still not doing too hot - his eyes were clearer and he had more energy (his tale wagged a bit) today, but he is still lethargic and they still have the catheter in and were giving him the IV fluids and antibiotics. He didn't throw up any today or have diarrhea, but he still has the fever, thus the inflammation. He is in the vet's still and if he seems better in the morning, they will try to feed him bland food, if he eats it and keeps it down, he can come home. If not, they will keep him until he does keep the food down. He isn't quite out of the woods yet (sayeth the vet). We shall see what happens.

Thanks for the good wishes twice, right back at you since your girl has to go to the vet tomorrow. It's so hard to take them to the vet when they give you that sad look. :(

67. Thank you kindly, thank you all!
Steph is right about Winston being a survivor, it just seems unfair that he has to keep proving that.

I do appreciate the good wishes and healing vibes. Hugs to you all :grouphug:

"I miss Steph" - tell her that's a direct quote :)

68. oh, merh! Please give Winston a big hug for me
I'm so sorry he's feeling badly, and especially when he thought it would be so yummy! I have just read your post to Mr. ld, and we aren't going to give our sweet Libby anymore of these type of treats. So I thank you for sharing this information. You and Winston will be in my prayers; sending lots of healing energy your way

74. thank you lavenderdiva
We both can use the prayers and energies.

I have trouble understanding it myself, I always thought beef in any form was good for dogs.

This is from an article I found warning against feeding dogs such treats.

FATTY, RICH FOODS
Fatty trimmings typically come off the ham, roast turkey and butter-coated potato skins. Rich foods include bread dough, nuts, and of course, the gravy. Giving these to your dog is a trick not a treat, as they are dangerous. Board certified veterinarian Dr. Fred Metzger of State College, Pa., says, "Pancreatitis or inflammation of the pancreas is a serious disease and unfortunately common during the holidays. This potentially life threatening disorder can occur when pets overeat or eat fatty foods resulting in pancreatic irritation. Signs include vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia and an extremely painful abdomen. The usual culprit is owners feeding their pets table food items which irritate the gastrointestinal tract," continues Metzer.

Vomiting and diarrhea are the typical symptoms and veterinary attention may be required to treat the condition. Gastroenteritis or inflammation of the stomach and intestinal tract is even more common than pancreatitis. It's best to let Rover eat his regular food to avoid an unhappy, messy and possibly tragic holiday.

72. Oh!! I am so sorry! How were you to know?
They eat such random stuff it would seem okay! I think bigger dogs do better with that kind of food, but I am guilty of feeding mine the same! I had no idea!!

Poor Winston!! He'll be just fine I promise!

Thanks Shell, he is my baby and its not easy. Sure his little furry ass gets in the way sometimes, but not all the time. :(

His sisters miss him too. Hopefully I will be able to bring him home tomorrow.

Edited on Thu Mar-01-07 11:23 PM by Prisoner_Number_Six
...Yes, I'm kidding. I hate to see puppy pain. Doggie pets and ear scratches from me to you and him.
