Name a song that mentions another band/solo artist.
Edited on Thu Feb-22-07 10:03 PM by slj0101
That is, a band or solo artist not related to the artist that does said song. It can be either in the title or in the lyrics themselves.

This has something to do with the fact that I've had "Let's Make Love and Listen to Death From Above" stuck in my head all day.

Some more:

Wheatus- Teenage Dirtbag (mentions Iron Maiden)
Pink Floyd- Nobody Home (the "obligatory Hendrix perm")
Dead Milkmen-Punk Rock Girl (the Beach Boys)
LCD Soundsystem- Daft Punk's Playing at my House
Motorhead- R.A.M.O.N.E.S.

2. Only Wanna Be With You--Hootie & The Blowfish
"Put on a little Dylan, sitting on a fence"

-is actually a sideways reference to the band that they used to tour all over the southeast with; Dillon Fence. It played both ways and only those who saw them often really got it.

111. Behind the music
Darius added the lyric about Dylan and the fence because he thought the song sounded like a Dillon Fence song. That was their reward in lieu of royalties. Dillon Fence broke up after getting sick of people asking them if they got their name from that lyric.

7. The Bob Dylan Blues
By Syd Barrett
Got the bob dylan blues
And the bob dylan shoes
And my clothes and my hairs in a mess
But you know I just couldn't care less

Gonna write me a song bout whats right and whats wrong
Got God 'n my girl and all that
Quite while I make like a cat

Cause I'm a poet, dontcha know it
And the wind you can blow it
Cause I am mister dylan the king
And I'm free as a bird on the wing

Roam from town to town, guess I get people down
But I dont care too much about that
Cause my gut and my wallet are fat

Make a whole lot of dough but I deserve it though
I got soul and a good heart of gold
So I'll sing about war and the cold

Cause I'm a poet, don'tcha know it
And the wind you can blow it
Cause I am mister dylan the king
And I'm free as a bird on the wing

Well I sings about dreams and I rhymes it with seams
Cause it seems that my dream always means
That I can prophesies all kinds of things
But I don't give a damn about that!"

Well the guy who digs me Should try hard to see That he buys all my discs and a hat And when I'm town, go see that!
Cause I'm a poet, don'tcha know it
And the wind you can blow it
Cause I am mister dylan the king
And I'm free as a bird on the wing

22. "We're the Boingers" by Billy and the Boingers,
a.k.a Deathtongue.

Sung by Steve Dallas, Opus the Penguin, and Bill the Cat:

Jimmy dropped his pants,
And Ozzy dines on bats,
And Hendrix played guitar with his teeth.
The Deadheads got their Jerry,
And Mom's got her Barry,
And Ronnie listens to guys like Falwell and Meese.

Was Bowie ever a fairy?
Was Debbie ever Harry?
Was Elvis ever the King? Let's not be reflective.
Does Barbra wish she was a goy?
Is George really a boy?
Is Filthy ever Divine? It's all subjective.

33. Creeque Alley by the Mamas and the Papas
John and Mitchy were getting kind of itchy
Just to leave the folk music behind
Zal and Denny, working for a penny
Trying to get a fish on the line
In a coffee house Sebastian sat
And after every number they'd pass the hat
McGuinn and McGuire's just a-getting higher
In L.A., you know where that's at
And no one's getting fat except Mama Cass

Zally said, Denny, you know there aren't many
Who can sing a song the way that you do, let's go south
Denny said Zally, golly, don't you think that I wish
I could play guitar like you
Zal, Denny and Sebastian sat, at the Night Owl
And after every number they'd pass the hat
McGuinn and McGuire's still a-gettin' higher
In L.A., you know where that's at
And no one's getting fat except Mama Cass

When Cass was a sophomore, planned to go to Swarthmore
But she changed her mind one day
Standing on the turnpike, thumb out to hitch hike
Take her to New York right away
When Denny met Cass he gave her love bumps
Called John and Zal and that was the Mugwumps
McGuinn and McGuire couldn't get no higher
But that's what they were aiming at
And no one's getting fat except Mama Cass

Mugwumps, high jumps, low slumps, big bumps
Don't you work as hard as you play
Make up, break up, everything you shake up
Guess it had to be that way
Sebastian and Zal formed the Spoonful
Michelle, John, and Denny getting very tuneful
McGuinn and McGuire just a-catching fire
In L.A., you know where that's at
And everybody's getting fat except Mama Cass
Di-di-di-dit dit dit di-di-di-dit, who-o-oa

Broke, busted, disgusted, agents can't be trusted
And Mitchy wants to go to the sea
Cass can't make it, she says we'll have to fake it
We knew she'd come eventually
Greezin' on American Express cards
Tent's low rent, but keeping out the heat's hard
Duffy's good vibrations and our imaginations
Can't go on indefinitely
And California dreamin' is becoming a reality

45. Gator Country by Molly Hatchet
I've been to Alabama, people ain't a whole lot to see;
Skynyrd says its a real sweet home but it aint nothing to me.
Charlie Daniels will tell you the good lord lives in Tenessee, ha!
But Im going back to gator country where the wine and the women are free.

There's a gator in the bushes, hes calling my name,
And a saying come on boy, you better make it back home again.
There's many roads I've travelled but they all kind of look the same.
There's a gator in the bushes, lord, he's calling my name.

Old Richard Betts will tell ya lord he was born a ramblin man.
Well he can ramble back to Georgia but I wont give a damn.
Elvin Bishop out struttin' his stuff with little miss slick titty boom.
But Im going back to gator country to get me some elbow room.

There's a gator in the bushes he's calling my name.
And saying come on boy, you better make it back home again.
There's many roads I've travelled but they all kinda look the same.
There's a gator in the bushes, lord, he's calling my name. yep.

There's Marshall Tucker riding a rainbow searching for a pot of gold.
Well they can take the highway, baby, and they can take all they can hold.
The Outlaws down in Tampa town its a mighty fine place to be.
They got green grass and got high tides and sure looks good to me.

There's a gator in the bushes, hes calling my name.
Saying come on boy, you better make it back home again.
There's so many roads Ive travelled but they all kinda look the same.
There's a gator in the bushes , lord, he's calling my name.

Oh gator country,
A little bit of that chomp chomp

76. Bob Dylan mentions Alicia Keys
"Thunder On The Mountain"

Thunder on the mountain, and there's fires on the moon
A ruckus in the alley and the sun will be here soon
Today's the day, where I'm gonna grab my trombone and blow
Well, there's hot stuff here and it's everywhere I go

I was thinking about Alicia Keys, couldn't keep from crying
When she was born in Hell's Kitchen, I was living down the line
I'm wondering where in the world Alicia Keys could be
I been looking for her even clear through Tennessee

Feel like my soul is beginning to expand
Look into my heart and you will sort of understand
You brought me here, now you're trying to turn me away
The writing on the wall, come read it, come see what it does say

Thunder on the mountain, rolling like a drum
Going to sleep over there, that's where the music is coming from
I don't need any guide, I already know the way
Remember this, I'm your servant both night and day

The pistols are popping and the power is down
I'd like to try something but I'm so far from town
The sun keeps shining and the North Wind keeps picking up speed
Gonna forget about myself for a while, gonna go out and see what others need

I've been sitting down studying the art of love
I think it will fit me like a glove
I want some real good woman to do just what I say
Everybody got to wonder what's the matter with this cruel world today

Thunder on the mountain rolling to the ground
Gonna get up in the morning walk the hard road down
Some sweet day I'll stand beside my King
I wouldn't betray your love or any other thing

Gonna raise me an army, some tough sons of bitches
I'll recruit my army from the orphanages
I been to St. Herman's church, said my religious vows
As I've sucked the milk out of a thousand cows

I've got the pork chops, she's got the pie
She ain't no angel and neither am I
Shame on your greed, shame on your wicked schemes
I'll say this, I don't give a damn about your dreams

Thunder on the mountain heavy as can be
Mean old twister bearing down on me
All the ladies in Washington scrambling to get out of town
Looks like something bad is going to happen, better roll your airplane down

Everybody going and I want to go too
Don't wanna take a chance with somebody new
I did all I could, I did it right there and then
I've already confessed, no need to confess again

Gonna make a lot of money, gonna go up North
I'll plant and I'll harvest what the earth brings forth
The hammer's on the table, the pitchfork's on the shelf
For the love of God, you ought to take pity on yourself.

80. "My Heaven" Mary Chapin Carpenter
Mentions Eva Cassidy.

"Nothing shatters nothing breaks
Nothing hurts and nothing aches
We've got ourselves one helluva place in my heaven
Looking down at the world below
A bunch of whining, fighting schmo's
Up here we've got none of those, in my heaven

There's pools and lakes and hills and mountains
Music, art, and lighted fountains
Who needs bucks here, no one's counting
In my heaven
No one works, we all just play
We pick the weather everyday
If you change your mind, that's ok, in my heaven
Grandma's up here, Grandpa too
In a condo with to-die-for views
There's presidents and movie stars
You just come as you are
No one's lost and no one's missing
No more parting just hugs and kissing
And all these stars are just for wishing
In my heaven

There's little white lights everywhere
Your childhood dog in Dad's old chair
And more memories than my heart can hold
When Eva's singing "Fields of Gold"

There's neighbors, theives and long lost lovers
Villains, poets, kings and mothers
Up here we forgive each other, in my heaven
For every soul that's down there waiting,
Holding on, still hesitating
We say a prayer of levitating, in my heaven
You can look back at your life and lot
But it can't matter what you're not
By the time you're here, we're all we've got
In my heaven
In my heaven
In my heaven"

I'm not a Toby Keith fan, but I love Willie Nelson and this song is just funny.

I always heard that his herb was top shelf
I just couldn't wait to find out for myself
Don't knock it till you tried it, well I tried it my friend
I'll never smoke weed with Willie again

I learned a hard lesson in a small Texas town
He fired up a fat boy and he passed him around
The last words I spoke before they tucked me in
I'll never smoke weed with Willie again.

123. You know what's funny? My dad actually did smoke weed w/ Willie.
He was in the music biz in the S.F. Bay Area and m.c.ed quite a few shows. One of his favorite stories was how he was backstage w/ Willie and Mr. Nelson & crew were passing the joint around. Now, keep in mind my dad was not exactly a hippie. He hardly drank alcohol, let alone anything else. Yet he took a little toke and passed it along...He thought he was so cool after he did that.

Come to think of it, he got Willie's autograph for me on the cover of Newsweek when I was a kid (it was about '76, I think). I've gotta find that -- I think I still have it. I didn't really like country music then, and I'm still not much of a fan, but looking back I realize my dad got to meet most of the ones I now respect such as Johnny Cash, Willie, and Waylon. Dolly Parton was his favorite. He said he'd never met anyone nicer.

Anyway, enough of my babbling ...

in the Eagles GREATEST HITS (the last one :eyes: ) Henley says that that line was a return for Fagen mentioning them in that song.

Woke up at 3 A.M. with the radio on, that Gladys Knight and the Pips song on
About how she’d rather live in his world with him
Than live in her own world alone
And I lay there, head spinning, trying to fall asleep
And I thought to myself: "Oh, Gladys, girl, I love you but,oh-—get a life!"

113. Frank Zappa's "The Mud Shark" song - not only a band but an incident too
Vanilla Fudge is mentioned; however, legend has it that some members of Led Zeppelin (mainly John Bonham) were also in attendance when the incident happened

THE MUD SHARK DANCING LESSON!

Mud Sh-sh-shark
We're gonna do a little dancing,
A little dancing thing called the Mud Shark
Now, this dance started up in Seattle

Lemme tell you 'bout the Mud Shark...
The origins of the Mud Shark are as follows: There's a motel in Seattle, Washington called the Edgewater Inn. The Edgewater Inn's built on a pier.. so that means that when you look out your window you don't see any dirt -- it's got a bay or something out in your backyard,,, And to make it even more interesting, in the lobby of the aforementioned motel there's a bait and tackle shop where the residents can go down whenever they want to, and rent a fishing pole and some preserved minnows and schlep back up to their rooms, open the window, stick their little pole outside and within a few minutes actually catch a fish of some sort that they can bring into their motel room and do whatever they want with it... you know what I mean? Now in this bay there's quite a variety of ah... fish! Not only do they have mud sharks up there, they got little octopusses that you can catch. And all these denizens of the deep can come in real handy... Let's say you were a travelling Rock and Roll band called the Vanilla Fudge. Let's
say one night you checked into the Edgewater Inn Motel with a 8mm movie camera, enough money to rent a pole, and just to make it more interesting -- a succulent young lady (Mnaaaah!) with a taste for the bizarre... My mind drifts back to a meeting, a chance meeting in the Chicago O'Hare Airport where the members of the Vanilla Fudge told Don Preston about a home movie they made at the Edgewater Inn with a Mud Shark. I'm gonna tell you, this dance, the Mud Shark, is sweeping the ocean!...

Out
You go out
So far out
You do the Mud Shark. baby ... etc

118. Hank Williams Jr.
I like Charlie Daniels and
I love big John Cash
And I think Waylon "Woktosha" Jennings
Is a table thumpin' smash
Playin' with Marshall Tucker Band
Was as good as smokin' grass
But if you don't like Hank Williams
You can kiss our ass

Cause I think what they done
Is well worth doin'
And their doin' it the
Best way that they can
Oh you're the only one
That you are screwin'
When you put down what
You don't understand

I love all them Allman Brothers,
Merle Haggard, and George Jones
Shotgun Willie Nelson and them
Rockin' rollin' Stones
Everything the Eagles do
And I'm in love with Linda Rondstat
Anybody that don't like Hank Williams
You can kiss our ass

Cause I think what they done
Is well worth doin'
And their doin' it the
Best way that they can
Oh you're the only one
That you are screwin'
When you put down what
You don't understand

I ain't sayin' that he was
The first or the last
But if you don't like Hank Williams
You can kiss our ass
