The last film I saw that was amazing would probably be the Virgin Spring, but that's not very obscure. I figured "hidden" would be more appropriate for that.

It's criminal that Ian Holm wasn't so much as nominated for Best Actor for his performance in The Sweet Hereafter The Academy was too busy renominating previously honored actors that year.

Things I've seen and enjoyed that I don't hear much talk about:

Born Romantic

Hobson's Choice

Matewan

Hi-Life

Cradle Will Rock

Silver City

Shooting Fish

La Buche

Cold Comfort Farm

Others are bound to come to mind shortly...

He was also really good in Final Cut.

Others (not with Robin Williams), Igby Goes Down (just beautiful, but sad) and Children of Paradise (old French film, can't remember the French name, just the translation).

There's another old French film (like 1920s old) called Le Round (sp?) about syphilis. I remember it being extraordinarily funny, but it's really hard to find.

114. Great choice
Robin Williams was excellent in a one-note (written) part and hampered by a very weak ending. I found the film disturbing because in some way we can all relate to Sy's isolation.

My pick would be "Feed" (a doc about the 1992 Presidential campaign-way better than "War Room").

It's about a chain of people linked by sexual contact but motivated and driven in differing ways. There are a couple of remakes, including Chain of Desire, if I'm not mistaken.

126. I'm not sure
to be honest, I saw it in a film class about 6 years ago, and at the time was pretty sick with the flu, so most of the details of the lecture about it are incredibly hazy. sorry. I do remember that it was basically a safe sex movie - comparing the way the Parisians were having sex with the people riding a merry-go-round. It had a bit of a cautionary tale to it, ie Reefer Madness, but it was so tongue in cheek that it was fun rather than terrible.

60. They seem to be the ones that resonate the most with me
Edited on Tue Feb-20-07 06:49 PM by Forkboy
Let's face it,most comedies are just throw away movies, good for the moment but with no meat to chew on afterwards.I also like that they go away from the annoying habit of movie studios thinking people need an "upbeat" ending to make a movie enjoying.

Another great depressing movie is Grave of the Fireflies

""Powerful", "moving", "touching", and "great" are words frequently used by people to describe movies, but this is one of the very few cases where they are most sincerely deserved. Roger Ebert, hardly known as one to heap undue praise on any movie, called Grave of the Fireflies "one of the greatest war movies ever made," and far from hyperbole, that's exactly the level of praise that accurately describes it. Simultaneously an allegory of human failings and a quiet but unflinching look at two children caught in the peripheral effects of a war, Grave of the Fireflies is one of the most painful and affecting movies you're ever likely to see, animated or otherwise. In many cases, the fact that it is animated gives simple actions and scenes a beauty and innocence that would not have existed otherwise, creating all the more contrast with the harsh and painful realities experienced by the characters."

Just thinking of this movie makes me sad :(

A lot of people will shy away from animation that isn't Disney cute, but both Grave of the Fireflies and When The Wind Blows can be appreciated by anyone with a heart and soul, and are great examples of powerful and moving the medium can be.

I especially loved the scene where Bouchard was giving the language lesson to Ward as he was stuffing Therrien into the trunk. Also, even though it has been done, before I couldn't stop laughing at the scene when Bouchard and Ward are stoned in front of Bouchard's boss.

Best of all, even though you and I aren't on the same side of the coin on hockey, picking out all of those references to the game and to real people (Lindros, Gretzky, etc) was a blast.

I read that Patrick Huard wants the sequel to involve American cops because he wants to make fun of the idea of putting up a wall: http://www.thestar.com/artsentertainment/article/180993

45. Here's a couple
Paths of Glory- Stanley Kubrik directs Burt Lancaster, in black and white no less
Lonely are the Brave- Kirk Douglas
The Informer- Victor McLaglen
Invaders from Mars - I think that's the title. It's the one where the kid falls asleep and has a dream, then wakes up and we see the 'dream' start all over again.

107. Invaders from Mars....
I saw that movie on TV quite often as a kid and it made more of an impression on me than most Sci-Fi films.

I had it on DVD (until my DH lent it to a friend...:( ) and it held up very well. For a low-budget film, it's pretty artfully directed and designed.

The one film that I thought of was because the main actor in it has got a new one out now......

Lone Star with Chris Cooper.

This is a multi-generational film set in Texas, and it is just plain great story-telling!

It is not to be missed...

He is an incredibly good actor, and should be much better known than he is....

I own a copy so I get to watch it every couple of months.

The storytelling is excellent. The use of pans to transition across time was so much fun, I loved it!!!
It did a pretty good job at showing Texas culture in microscosm, this native Texan found it believable.
The music provided a nice touch to it as well. The acting was tour de force. My personal favorite is Kris K. as Sheriff Charlie Wade. One of the better villians in recent memory.

On Edit: A big honorable mention to Frances McD as Cooper's ex-wife. She had that role nailed!

Joe Bob says check it out!

110. Until seeing your post ...
... I was beginning to believe I'd made up this entire film in my head -- because I've never met another soul who saw it. Brilliant film - and even more relevant today than it was back when it was made.

My personal favourite from the past few years is "Monsoon Wedding". It's not unknown, but has been dismissed by many as a yet another Bollywood romantic comedy. It is actually about very well fleshed-out characters who step outside of what is perceived as their 'traditional' roles in society to stand up for what is morally just, especially when it comes to the women who are the true foundation of their lives.

92. King Of Masks
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115669/
Wang Bianlian is an aging street performer known as the King of Mask for his mastery of Sichuan Change Art in a true story. His wife left him with and infant son over 30 years ago. The son died from illness at age 10. This left Wang a melancholy loner aching for a male descendent to learn his rare and dying art. A famous master performer of the Sichuan Opera offers to bring him into his act, thus giving Wang fame and possible fortune, but Wang opts for staying the simple street performer. Then, one night after a performance he is sold a young boy by a slave trader posing as the boy's parent. "Grandpa" finds new joy in life as he plans to teach "Doggie" (an affectionate term often used for young children in China) his art. All is well until Doggie is found out to really be a girl.

Hamsun Max von Sydow is superb in a biopic about Norway's only Nobel Prize winning author--who turned into a Nazi (literally) later in life.

Upswing Finnish yuppies are talked into taking an unusual vacation in a low-income housing project. What starts off as a clash-of-cultures comedy takes an interesting twist in the middle.

Edelweiss Pirates True story of anti-Nazi youth living literally underground in the last days of World War II

Man without a Past A Finnish man loses his memory after he's mugged, and with no name or identity is forced to live among the homeless

Les Voyageurs A medieval knight and his servant are magically transported to modern-day France, where they meet up with one of the knight's descendants.

The Fringe Dwellers Australian aborigines living on the edge of a small town respond to racism in different ways, some constructive, some destructive.

Strangers in Good Company A group of women from a Canadian senior center are stranded in the middle of nowhere when their bus breaks down. The characters and stories are based on the real lives of the actresses.

Supermarket Woman A mom-and-pop supermarket in Japan is almost going under due to cutthroat competition from a national chain until a neighborhood woman volunteers to help them understand their customers and their competitors.

Clockwise John Cleese plays (what else?) a pompous ass whose life falls apart in every possible way after he takes a wrong turn in a train station.

The Interview An Australian man (Hugo Weaving, in an early role) is rousted out of bed and dragged down to the police station, for what, we don't know at first. Is he guilty or are the police trying to frame him? You'll go back and forth on this.

113. Lydia's advice for finding great but obscure movies
If there is an international film festival anywhere near where you live, attend as many screenings as you can!

You will see many wonderful films, full of fascinating stories that Hollywood has never dreamed of, and great actors whom you've never heard of. You also get to see glimpses of life in countries that you will probably never visit (or want to visit in some cases, e.g. Kazakhstan).

Most of them will never find a U.S. distributor, thanks to the dumbing down of America. (In the early 1960s, it was trendy to go see the latest French or Italiian film.)

I'll just throw out some names here: Hear My Song (Ireland), The Other Side of Sunday (Norway), The Thief (Russia), Yana's Friends (Israel), Peking Opera Blues (Hong Kong), Peppermint Candy (Korea), The Blue Kite (China), Toto the Hero (Belgium), Angi Vera (Hungary), Emil and the Detectives (Germany), Water Boys (Japan), The Lizard (Iran).

All wonderful films that never found a U.S. distributor.

Film festivals can be your only chance to catch some great cinema.

139. Two choices
I was watching FOX MOVIE CHANNEL this morning and saw a movie I've always loved, "The Lion". Anyway, it caused me to remember another movie I loved as a kid called "Sammy Going South"; the alternate title is "A Boy Ten Feet Tall". It's about a young boy in Africa whose parents are killed and who has to walk to South Africa to live with his aunt. Edward G. Robinson is in it. "The Lion" is about a young girl (Pamela Franklin) who has a rather unsettling relationship with a lion. It's one of those movies where when you're a kid you think of it as a cool adventure movie but don't quite grasp what's really going on.

Anyone here remember "The Little Kidnappers" about two small boys who kidnap a baby when their stern grandpa won't let them have a puppy? It was re-made for television with Charlton Heston playing the granddad, but the original is still the best. In fact, the two little boys got Honorary Oscars for their performances.

143. Cranes Are Flying
One of the best Soviet films of the post-Stalinist thaw. A sad but utlimately hopeful film about two young lovers separated by World War II.

The Loved One--Also watch for Liberace as an undertaker. Priceless!

144. The Story of Ricky...notoriously awful and gory martial arts movie.
It's so disgustingly violent that it's a blast to watch.

145. There was one I watched on
the Independent film channel.
It was about a family searching their roots and end up in a graveyard where the father is telling the story from the beginning.
It was Italian and the movie was awesome.... I think the movie title was the name of the family....

lost

A much better but far less hyped version of the famous iceberg vs. ship tragedy.
