1. After my mom's old dog died, she got a new dog from the pound
This dog had been found wandering alone in the woods far from civilization, and taken to the pound. The people at the pound called her Pippi, because she has long white markings on her legs. Aside from that she is a reddish dog with a smooth coat.

I was at my mom's house over Christmas, and a couple times my mom mentioned that the dog must have had a different name before she went to the pound. She's a very sweet dog. She knows how to sit, and she's very well-behaved. She had a family before she got lost. My mom has tried to find her original owners online, but to no avail. She answers to Pippi just fine.

My mom and I were talking about this one evening and my mom mentioned again that she had had a different name. I said "If she was my dog I would call her Ginger." The dog totally came RUNNING over to me wagging her tail REALLY HARD. My mom looked at me in total amazement, and said "Do that again!" I tried calling her other names and she didn't respond. Every time I called her "Ginger" she would come RUNNING over.

I totally guessed her name. :D

2. I don't want to come off as a heart whore...
Edited on Sat Feb-17-07 01:24 PM by NewWaveChick1981
...so you don't have to give me one. :P I've already got a few...

But I'll tell you a heartwarming story anyway. When I was the financial aid director at a small private liberal arts college for women, we had an elderly African-American woman who was there working on her bachelor's degree. She was 82 years old when I first met her and she received financial aid from us. She came by to see me one day, and we started talking about education. Turns out, she dropped out of school when she was 16 and got married. She had ten children by the time she was 30. She intended to finish high school when she could, but in those days, there wasn't any such thing as a GED or high school equivalency. Her husband died suddenly when she was 35 and she had to support those kids by herself. She found work as a seamstress and barely got by on her meager wages. She always made sure her kids had clean clothes, food to eat, a roof over their heads, and an education. Her children knew how hard she worked and promised her that one day they'd help her when they were older. She made sure that every single one of her kids went to college. She had six sons and four daughters, and every single one of them became a professional---two doctors, one lawyer, three scientists, two educators, and two professors. Her kids made sure she was well taken care of, but she always felt inadequate because she didn't have a high school diploma. When she was 79, she decided to get her GED. She passed with flying colors, and then she decided she was ready for college. She started college at our school when she was 81, and she had a straight 4.0 average the entire time. She was actively involved in student government, and everyone was in awe of her. The 18-year-olds could not keep up with her! :D She graduated summa cum laude with a degree in biology when she was 85, and I think half of the audience at that commencement ceremony was related to her! :) All of her children and their spouses were there, and so were her granchildren, great-grandchildren, and even one great-great-grandchild.

Education was that important to her, and although she had deferred her education until late in life, it was a personal goal that I was proud to have watched her achieve. :bounce: :D It's stuff like that that keeps me in this profession. :D

12. Thanks for the great story!
Your story surely deserves a heart. Unfortunately, being the egalitarian that I am, I have a desire to dispense of the hearts in an even manner....LOL. Please, do not take that as a detraction from your wonderful story of perseverance.

6. sweet and funny story
Years ago, my family was at the local video store. My husband and I had one child and we wanted another one. Nothing was working, we only had the 4 year old daughter. I never knew my daughter was so aware that he parents wanted to give her a brother/sister until that one day at the video store.

While we all looked for videos I eyed her down the aisle talking to a woman. She had a baby in a baby carrier and my daughter had 7 cents in her hand. I heard her telling the lady how her Mommy and Daddy would like another baby but something might be wrong with my mommy, so she would like to buy hers. This mother looked up at me and we both smiled. I told Melissa that was a sweet thing to do but that Mommy loves her baby like we love you. We left the video store.

Melissa is now 27 and has a brother and a sister, and we still laugh about how she tried to buy us a baby at the video store.

15. That is hilarious...
From another 27 year old Melissa, that sounds like something I would have done as a young on'. She sounds like a peach, as most Melissas usually are!

He liked to fry up gingered heart accompanied by a fine cianti and some fava beans. That was pretty heart warming. :dunce:

16. I do not have a story but
I must tell you that your post is so thoughtful. You are obviously one of those special people with lots of love in their heart. I will retire tonight distraught that I did not save a heart for you.
How did I do?

17. That is nice of you to say!
Don't be distraught. I was too cheap to buy more than three hearts to give, or I would have given you one.
