Ford Focus owners: Might buy one. Opinions/experiences/advice?
I'm considering a slightly used 05 or 06 wagon. I would prefer the 5 speed. This would be my commuter and the main long-distance trip car, replacing the old wood-slathered big Merc wagon.

I really know nothing of the history of these. The size is nice, fairly roomy inside for two adults, one boy and sometimes a big dog. They look OK and the mileage (27 city/37 highway) is rather good for a wagon.

So, DU Focusers, what can ya tell me?

1. I drove one as a rental car recently, and HATED it.
Disliked it intensely on just about every level--handling, performance, gas mileage, etc.

4. I've driven my friend's and I have to agree.
Shitty handling and performance.

The fucking thing was in the shop all the time, too.

2. Really poor
resale value. If you do opt for one, make sure you don't overpay.

3. A Ford Focus...
....has served the Congressional candidate for whom I was treasurer quite well through two campaigns (lots of miles). Of the Big 3-made small (cheap) cars, it seems to be the most desirable choice.

5. No Focus here, but I love my Saturn wagon if you're looking at other domestic options
They're a bit bigger and nicer inside but not too big. Mine is 10 years old and coming up on 150 K miles and I still love it. The new version is a bit different, I think RetroLounge has one if you need details.

6. I have two family members who own them and know another person
they seem happy with them??? It's the "replacement" for the Escort isn't it? THOSE were good little cars. Check Consumer reports - well worth the subscription price for a year of on-line access for all kinds of things.
