It's used for emphasis, sometimes unconsciously, as a form of punctuation.

It drives my wife nuts; she is a tech writer, and I ask her to proof read my work from Time to Time.

8. I remember when I really first started emailing people regularly

and I would (and still do, most of the time) use proper caps. My ex wrote back once (and bear in mind, this person is a professional journalist!) and was all like "awww, that's adorable, you're typing like you're using a typewriter."

Now it's 99% mood based. I still mostly use caps and stuff when posting or in emails but while instant messaging? Fuggeddabouddit. :D
