3. Thanks!
I remember when I heard his car, with him dead in it, was found in Golden Gate Park as if it were yesterday. I remember the Fillmore. I understand it's a wonder he lived as long as he did with what he did to himself, but I still wish he was here!

4. happy birthday jerry garcia
i like to remember you today at you very best....the gig under the pyramids in egypt when the full moon came up (and the f***ing mosquitos suddenly took off eastwards on a clement breeze!) Still got those mozzy scars, jerry, just like you had! And the audio tape of your impromptu rendition of The Midnight Special, when everyone else had passed out. Many happy returns, wherever you areXXXXXXX

5. I remember the day he died like it was yesterday.
It was the first time I really knew what people mean when they say they felt like they were kicked in the gut. I was at work and the bitchy coworker bounces up to me and says "You are like a Deadhead aren't you? I just heard that Jerry Garcia died." I fell to pieces.
When I got home that night my Dead News paper was in my mailbox with the front page article about the problems that had been going on at the shows, the headline read "One Way or Another, This Darkness Has to End." I still get a lump in my throat thinking about it.

My favorite bluegrass/funk guitar player. SOmeone on this board said that they weren't fond of Jerry's playing 'cause it was "Jazz country noodling". I think that's a great description. I guess I just like jazz country noodling.

At one point my own guitar playing was so derivitive of Jerry, that I needed to mostly stop listening to him, just to get a little more of myself into my playing. During this time I sort of lost intrest in the Dead, after having seen probably 70 or so shows. When Jerry died I wasn't really paying attention to the Dead at all. But now adays I do look back fondly of going on tour, obsessing over tapes with my friends, checking in, and mostly playing my guitar along with the tapes - hour after hour, trying to play just like Jerry.

You could hear in his playing that he loved music more than himself. You could hear in his singing that he loved Peace more than himself. Happy Birthday.
