I have an elderly cat
and it breaks my heart when she tries to do thing that she shouldn't. She is 22! She tries to jump in my lap, she misses....she tries to run around and catch phantom moths...it's going to be sad when I lose her. :-(

1. For your sake I hope she goes like our 23 year old did
a few months ago...she just quietly aged out of the system. Started sleeping more and more until one day she just wasn't there any more. It hurt to lose her but not as much as if she'd been sick and I'd had to make the decision to help her go.

2. What a sweet-looking kitty.
Good health to her -- looks like she's holding up extremely well, even if she can't quite jump like she used to.

3. you have my sympathies
 as does your beautiful cat

I have sister-cats who are 18; they have a couple of little doggy stair things to help them out for some things, getting on and off the couch and the bed... so far, they are both doing fairly well.

4. Aww Roon...
...I do know how you feel. Both of my cats are getting up there in years. I don't know what I'd do without either of them.

After I read your post, I went to where "Bear" was resting and lied down beside him...and kissed him, and just held him for a few minutes. He purred so loudly. Then, I did the same for my "Pumpkin."

We'll just cherish every day we have left with them, and try not to think about that inevitable day.

Hugs for you...

12. The Vet said no...but sometimes I wonder.
Edited on Wed Jan-03-07 09:43 AM by KC2
We got her as a stray. And, she was severely malnourished and half bald when we found her at the shelter. The Vet said she is a Tabby, since she is really too small in size to be a Main coon (she also doesn't eat enough to be one). She wasn't happy there, in that photo, because I wouldn't let her in the door before taking a pic! She's the sweetest, most gentle...and softest cat I've ever had.

6. I really feel for ya
Edited on Wed Jan-03-07 01:57 AM by sammythecat
I really do. I have a cat that's 18 and a german shepherd that's 16. I know that feeling of dread when I think they don't have much time left.

It's always gratifying to hear of people such as yourself who have a heart big enough to include some animal friends.

My heart goes out to you. This has made me sad.

9. Awwww, what a
sweet cat. Just give her all the love she deserves, that's all you can do, and that's all that she asks.

11. It does my heart good to see a picture of an old cat.
Whenever I see an elderly cat (or dog), I think it's wonderful because that means he's had a long, happy life with someone who cherished him. So many people dispose of cats and dogs when they refuse to act like stuffed animals. I know it's tough for you, thinking about his death but remember, your cat thinks and lives in the present. I'm sure he's still happy.

13. Oh, what a sweet little face!

zanne has a great perspective; our pets live in the present and are happy for any comfort and love we give them. She doesn't worry about her death, only the quality of her life in the moment. What a long, happy life she is living with someone who loves her. That's all she knows, and all she has to know. Maybe sharing that contentment with her will make your burden of future events easier to bear.

Best to you both.
