Recommend a good coffee
Edited on Tue Jan-02-07 06:32 AM by Wetzelbill
I just bought a couple kinds, but I am always looking for future references, and I do not mind shaking things up, so what kind of coffee would you all recommend?

BTW, at this second, I am drinking "Sumatra" from Tully's. I also have: Starbuck's "Serena Organic" and Tully's "Full City Roast." Oh... I just saw I have little Seattle's Best "French Roast" left as well.

I think I like Serena Organic the best out of what I have, but all are pretty solid.

5. Allow me to recommend a coffee mill
Edited on Tue Jan-02-07 06:50 AM by Heidi
I've owned two electric, Krups coffee mills in 15 years. The model I've bought is inexpensive and seems to last forever. (I'd probably still have my first one, but my ex got it in the split.)

13. I've used mine for spices but also for grinding pecans.
I'm just careful to clean it well between various uses. I once used my Krups mill for grinding pecans, and then didn't wipe it out; next time I used it for coffee beans, it yielded a big, oily mess of coffee chunk. Live and learn. :P

16. I have a different mill (a Capresso) that I use for coffee. I found that some of the oils in
certain spices (esp. cloves) tend to cloud the Krupps lid and affect the integrity of the plastic. As a result, I've gone through two lids. But, it's still a fairly good record of service for one little mill!

*Sorry about your pecan oil coffee chunk; here in the South, we'd have laughed it off and called it "Praline coffee"*

50. Mine is a Krups burr grinder.
http://www.krupsusa.com/All+Products/Coffee+Grinders/Products/GVX2/GVX2.htm

It is said that burr grinders are the best, as they give you a more consistent grind that is not over heated. A nice benefit about this grinder is that it shuts itself off after grinding the amount you need.

I picked it up on sale for about $40 about two years ago and i use it every day. I love it.

I use Costco Colombian beans, roasted by Starbuck's. Excellent coffee.

10. dude you are hardcore
I just buy whatever is good at my grocery store, and since I broke my leg I just go to the one across the street. :) The selection is actually a little weak. Limited to mainly Starbucks and Tully's type stuff. No fair trade. But, I do have some fair trade stuff my Aunt gave me. Poor thing, it isn't that good though. :) But rest assured, I will do some research.

Starbucks is okay. I never used to patronize them (big chain and all) until I heard that they treat their employees super good. For that, I'll buy a cup every now and then.

25. Find a local roaster who does Ethiopian Yirgacheffe
Edited on Tue Jan-02-07 01:03 PM by fleabert
a very nice, naturally sweet coffee- not sugar sweet, but coffee bean sweet. Yummy! I don't recommend Starbucks for bean or ground purchase, they burn their beans to increase the caffeine content- go with a local roaster for the freshest, best tasting coffee around. Even better if you get one that does fair trade/organic. Buy a pound of beans, keep them in an airtight container, ground fresh before brewing, and you will have the best coffee of your life!

30. Roasting coffee does nothing to "increase the caffeine content"
Caffeine content is nearly identical in all shades of roasts of coffee. In fact, it is slightly less in a very dark roast. Caffeine content is directly related to the altitude at which the coffee is grown. The higher the altitude, the less caffeine. Therefore; gourmet coffees are naturally lower in caffeine than typical supermarket canned coffee blends.

47. Not according to my roaster when I owned a coffee shop.
I accepted their information, as they were kick ass roasters and I adored them- but a teeny bit of research (this is clearly not exhaustive) shows we are both right, and I am also a bit wrong. It's complicated. http://www.roastmagazine.com/backissues/janfeb2005/caffeinecontrol.html

But Starbucks burns their beans beyond belief- for whatever purpose. I hate it without tons of milk and sugar for that reason. Now, the coffee from my cafe (also from my roaster, of course) was fantastic without anything else! I'll take a local roaster who uses their eyes and nose to guage each batch to perfection any day of the week. but I will do Starbucks when I get a giftcard or if I am out of town and can't find an independent cafe.

36. yeah, Starbucks utterly over roasts their beans-- it's a crime...
...that people buy that burnt crap. Of course, I think it's also because they buy mediocre beans from bulk suppliers. Over roasting doesn't affect caffeine content- Squatch is right about that-- but it makes all their products have a similar characterless burnt taste. Yuck.

44. While the beans are still hot!
You probably visit the 4th Street store. I started buying there when they opened around 1978. The proprietor (the only guy I ever saw in the one man shop) gave me an education on coffee while he filled orders for the restaurants. We talked acid, the blend, and the roast while we chewed the hot delicious beans. I often though he had the neatest job in the world.
