1. Definitely a white Christmas here,
MissHoneychurch (Edmonton, Alberta). It's been quite warm as of late, compared to the frigid temperatures we had earlier in the month. (now around 0c, lows perhaps in the -5 or -10 range; was in the -30c range, windchill - 45).

It's melting, however, but there's too much of it to melt by Christmas (perhaps even by spring!).

Will you have snow? :hi:

2. No snow here
haven't asked my mom if she has snow. I will be with her this Christmas. I will find out tonight. But somehow I doubt it. It was too warm over the last weeks and when it was cold there was no rain/snowfall.

Merry Christmas to you :hi:

3. Merry Christmas
and a Happy Solstice to you, too, MissH!!:hi:

I just had some wonderful German cookies tonight...I don't remember the name of them offhand (lebenkuchen?? something like that, plus there were a couple more). I was actually talking about you, as it was a German friend who made them...I told her about your wonderful Munich pics. :-)

5. No snow for us
As it has been warm and sunny for the past week; and it is predicted to remain that way. Right now the sun has not risen and it is 17 degrees centigrade.

9. I live on the coast now
I accepted a new job and moved this summer. I only recently reconnected the cable so that is one reason I haven't been around. I did spend the summer in Wittenberg attending a university course for teachers. I had a wonderful time (although the course was very difficult) and lived with a family who had a house which was not very far from the Elbe. I found it to be rather enjoyable. The most challenging part was teaching in the local gymnasium. Those students were excellent! They were curious, insightful, and they would not let me leave when class was over.

13. In a city which was declared the 12th most dangerous city in the US
North Charleston, SC. However, I live about twenty miles away and commute to work.

I have have two experiences which support this assessment of the city since I've been here.

15. Only German
I was recruited to teach in the International Baccalaureate program for this school district. The IB program of study is better than the local state standards and the students will receive a diploma from the IBO in Geneva in lieu of the standard state diploma. I enjoy teaching these students more than at the other school because the IB language standards are European, so the students actually have to gain proficiency in their second language. Also, the students I have now are in this program of study by choice so they work harder. Meine neue Schüler sind "Sonntagskinder"!

17. Sonntagskinder?
I came across this term while reading German folklore this summer. When I asked about the meaning it was explained to me that the term basically meant one who never does anything wrong and is always honest. Maybe it is an antiquated term.

My new school is very different from the other (which was in a "country club" environment). I now work with students who do not have very much but want to work their way out of their current situation and improve their lives. The IB program, in our particular case, provides the students with a haven from their otherwise dangerous environment. We have activities for them which extend beyond the classroom and provide them with much needed support for their objectives in life.

19. Gotcha
I am familiar with the term but didn't think about that in this moment.

That sounds wonderful and you know that your work is falling on fruitful soil. I bet it is more fun to teach them than kids who aren't interested.

25. Yes it is
However, some of the things which these students experience makes me want to cry. On the other hand, their determination to improve their lives and overcome this environment is rewarding.

On the last day of school before Christmas vacation I received presents from some of my new students. What makes these presents extra special is that my students made them rather than buying them as my former students did.

What did you do with them on the last day? Showed them "Die Feuerzangenbowle"?

29. I gave them a choice of things to do
I have a collection of films from Germany and they chose to watch one: In weiter Ferne, so nah!. When I asked them why they chose this they told me that they found it to be challenging because I allow only the German captioning for the hearing impaired. They also told me that they find European films, like this one, to be more thought provoking than other films (they also like Willem Dafoe and wanted to see him in a foreign film).

35. Here are a few:
Edited on Fri Dec-22-06 09:36 AM by Left_Winger
Der Himmel über Berlin, which is another film by Wim Wenders, The Edukators, Lola rennt, Goodbye Lenin, Nirgendwo in Afrika, Wie Feuer und Flamme... I also have American TV shows which have been dubbed into German such as CSI and Futurama which they like to watch.

This is one way I have of actually exposing them to German as it is spoken. Until my arrival they had known only the previous German teacher and they way he spoke German; they want to try out what he taught them with someone new. The other German teacher here is an American whose parents are from Hamburg. She tells me that I have a distinctive Sachsisch accent when I speak German. My host family in Wittenberg told me that I have a noticable English accent, but they could not tell which country I was from. Putting this all together only makes me wonder... na, jut!... Entschuldigung, na gut.

11. Sad to say that
the snow went away when we had the last rain. Oh well.

I should really be getting ready for my guests. They'll be arriving this afternoon, but I'm sitting here reading DU. Now how's that for ambition. Well . . . I am doing laundry. Does that count for something?

You're more than welcome about the card.

12. Oh definitely
Laundry is a tough task. You need to separate light colors from dark colors, you need to figure out the right temp for each piece of clothes. That is hard work. And then there is always that sock monster that just loves to steal socks.

When do your friends come? At least you are off today and don't have to go to work.

I would say you would get bored rather fast then.

And yes, you belong there. It is what makes you feel better about yourself. The warm weather, no snow, no cold. Settle in and then start your social life. It will all come. You are so easy to be loved.

33. I need to go for a drive west or maybe north of here.

This part of Florida is way too crowded! My body reminds me on a regular basis that it's not going to let me go back to work, that was a big part of my reason for the drastic relocation. Maybe south Fl is too far to go. I've got to get out and look around before I head north in late Spring.
