If you or anyone you know has frequent flyer miles, you can buy enough to add on to get the lowest airfare possible. People can "donate" miles to you--check with the program to see exactly what you need to do.
You also have a small problem with the fact that your departure city isn't a major route--if you can get to Detroit or other larger city airport, your chances of getting a less expensive flight is much much better.
Also, check with some of the bogger corporations or even charities in your area. Sometimes one of them might have "pull" and get you on a cheaper flight. There are also several charities which help in flying people places, but unfortunately, I'm not really acquainted with their names, only with the fact that they exist.
Another option you can try is to contact one of the local travel agents and talk with them. They have the advantage to finding inexpensive flights, BUT they also might have a tour group that they can fill an extra seat with, and will be willing to have you take it.
Last but not least, if you can be prepared to leave at any time, you might consider a marathon session at the airport--go there really early and tell the airlines you are willing to travel by standby and tell them the circumstances. Oftentimes, there is a seat open on an early flight, but you might have to wait until a seat is open, but you will have to hang around to get one.
Regardless, good luck, and hope you get there in time--I saw my dad just a month before he died, and I had to fly from Mass. to California to see him. I knew the end was coming soon, so I got the chance to say goodbye.
