Update on Velma's jogging adventure
First let me say thank you to everyone who posted after my first day of jogging to give me all sorts of great advice for dealing with the muscle aches and making sure I didn't overdo it. *smooches to you all*

It's been really hard to work in jogging what with it being dark when I wake up for work and dark by the time I get home. So this morning's roadwork was only jog number 3. Let me tell you I feel much better than I did after numbers 1 and 2. :-) I can see where this running thing can become habit forming. I feel like I could seriously kick someone's ass right now.

Anyway, mostly I just wanted to thank everyone for the support and highly encourage anyone who's sitting and thinking about New Year's resolutions this morning to get up and get moving. I resolved to eat right and exercise more 2 New Years ago and I feel incredible this morning. :-)

3. oh yeah...absoluately
The jogging is new but I've been exercising and going to the gym for nearly 2 years now and I love that feeling you get when you're all sweaty and tired and exillerated all at the same time.

5. First off, GO YOU!
:bounce:  :toast:

Secondly, and I'm being serious here...what sort of erm...*support* system are you using? I'd love to get my fat ass out and jog, but I fear the two black eyes I'd inevitably end up with. I've tried all commercially available sports bras and it just ain't happenin'. Failing a winch and pulley system, I'm all outta ideas...:(

6. Double up.
I have to wear two sports bras, or exercise is so uncomfortable that I don't do it.

7. Nothing out of the oridinary actually...
got a couple of Hanes and Prospirit sportsbras that work pretty well for me at 36DD. I have found that the ones that tie in back work better for me in terms of keeping everything pointed up than the ones that are all one solid piece. I can keep tightening the straps if I need to.

What I think has really helped has been all the weightlifting I've done over the last couple of years. I've done a considerable amount of work on my pectorals so they support all those boobs a lot better than they would have if I had started jogging 2 years ago.

I also may just be used to it at this point after several months or aerobics and Tae Bo. I seem to recall after my very first aerobics class posting something along the lines of "My tits are falling off". :-)

9. *snort*
You are too cute. *smooches*

And who said I was running away honey? ;-)

Seriously, yes I have taken up jogging. I had to do something. The last 25 pounds are being really reluctant about coming off. I hit these plateaus every so often and I have to change something to shock my body into upping my metabolism a bit more. So I'm running. And it feels pretty damn good today. :-)

11. I'd do that
But running hurts my knees (which you should be careful of too, BTW) and I never had the body for a runner.

To me, a runner is someone who's rail-thin, and has a long shape to them. I have more of a wrestler's body.

It's like that scene in the Two Towers when Aragon, Legolas and Gimli are chasing after Merry and Pippin and Aragon and Legolas are way ahead of Gimli, who states "We dwarves are wasted on cross country, we are natural sprinters - very dangerous over short distances."

That's me. I can run about 50 feet and beat Carl Lewis, but after that I'm too pooped to make it around the block. :D

14. I'm not really...
shaped like a "runner" either. But I'm doing it anyway. I remember running a lot as a kid. I played competitive sports and I can remember running and running and running and how energetic I was back then and I want that feeling back. (Honestly, what I really want is to get my wind back so I can go join a basketball league next fall. I just realized that while I was jogging a couple of days ago.) :-)

I'm trying to be careful of my knees - running with good form, heel to toe and all that. I have to be careful. I really fucked my knees up playing basketball when I was younger. But I must have done a really good job when I rehabbed last time because so far I haven't had any pain in my knees or ankles. GO ME!

10. oooh! A Velma-smoochie!
It can become habit-forming indeed. Better at restoring vigor, clearing one's mind and instilling confidence than anything I know.

You go, girl!

As much as I'm enjoying the physcial feeling, the chance to completely empty my mind and think clearly has been amazing.

15. Just remember to maintain vareity and set goals

Sounds silly, but if you get in a rut, it's all too easy to quit and say "well, another exercise program down the hatch." Measure your distance with your car, and try to either improve your time or increase your distance from week to week--nothing helps more than identifiable progress for me. Plus change your route if you find one getting stale. Oh, and change your shoes after about 300-400 miles. And stretch before and after!

edit: Oh yeah, good luck and have fun!

:D

16. Great advice
I've done some of it actually. measured my route with the car on the way home from shopping the other night. I made it in 2 less minutes today than the first day. GO ME! I figure I'll increase my distance as I increase the distance I'm actually jogging as opposed to walking. I alternate between the two and though it's only been 3 days and I can already tell I jogged more today than last time. :-)

The jogging is actually my latest attempt to stay out of a rut. I have to change exercises periodically because my body gets used to what I'm doing and I hit a plateau and stop losing weight. I have 25 more pounds to go (after losing 118 to this point) and have been stuck at 158 for a couple of weeks so I had to change something.

Oh, and thanks for letting me know about the shoes. I was wondering how long a good pair ought to last. *smooch*

17. Congrats and good luck
Running is a great sport. I hope that you will stick with it. Yes, it can be addicting and a good run can literally make you feel high.
I used to run and wish to again, but I have personal issues with it that a beginner would not have.

18. Thanks
I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the well wishes from people on DU. I came here for the political discussion and while I still enjoy that part of the site dynamics, I love this place because of the support and care exhibited by the people who come here. :-)

Sorry about your personal issues with running. I have a feeling I know what you're talking about - I have some personal issues with music that have kept me from playing the piano for years though it was the love of my life for a long time. I hope you're able to work though it.
