Popups on the rampage; WTF?
I have a pop-up stopper. It makes a "pop" when it is preventing a pop-up from appearing. It holds up what I'm doing for a second each time, but I don't have to go in and delete all the pop-ups. Sometimes IE freezes up and I have to shut down; some pop-up with extra shrapnel, I guess.

Well, this morning, I check my inbox and find a response on a website that I moderate. I click on it to go to the response, and hear one "pop." Suddenly, as the site is loading, a barrage of "pops" hit my computer, one after another. I look, and...I have 35...yes, 35windows open to the site/message I clicked on. For every "pop," a window was opening to this site. Not shutting down a pop-up, but creating a duplicate pop-up. I went through and deleted them. I got an IE error message, shut down, and started over.

WTF?

1. I had to switch to Mozilla
I was using IE6 with the Google popup blocker, AdAware, and Spybot. I started getting popups, updated the 2 programs to the latest versions, rebooted several times. Nothing worked. So I downloaded Mozilla and began using it. Every few days, I check for AdAware and Spybot updates and run the program again. But each time I start IE6, I get the same popups.

I miss my google and Webster toolbars.

Let me know if you find a fix, and good luck.

2. Mozilla Firebird has a built in Google window like Safari or Opera
Don't settle for microshaft software.

3. I'll keep Mozilla in mind.
I like my google toolbar, but I'm tired of the number of things IE keeps trying to update me with; they get in the way more than they help. I don't need 4 different search bars up there; the google search bar does fine.

IE freezes up and "stops responding" on a pretty regular basis; a few times a day. :grr:

6. Google toolbar for Mozilla
There is an opensource free version of the Google toolbar written for Mozilla. I use it inside Firebird and it has everything the IE version does, as far as I know, except for the pop-up blocking. Of course, that would be redundant in Mozilla/Firebird.

You can find it here.

You'll also find other toolbar goodness located on that page.

4. which one do you have?
I have the PanicWare freebie I DL'd from PCMagazine.com, and LOVE it. I set the option where the little white hand in the task bar silently has a red bar and circle blink over it when it stops a pop-up. The only kind it can't stop are ActiveX-based scripts, but those are rare. My surfing is about 99.9% pop-up free.

So far, I have not experienced any DU pop-ups like I have seen posts about.

7. Panicware
I heard 6 clicks when I opened your post, plus one pop-up from ebay made it through. This is rare; I usually don't hear anything at all at DU.

Why some can get through and others can't; why my pop-up stopper seems to conflict with IE and freeze it up at times, I have no clue.

8. I feel helpless!
Maybe you need AdAware 6.0, also free, to clean up those pesky cookies and things that 'track' your surfing. The more debris the corporations detect, the more pop-ups they will cause.

DL it, scan, and quarantine all those trackers. Then see if it helps!

Because I feel like Zomby Tech Support has failed you. :-)

9. Will do.
When I get back from my morning ride. 7 or 8 miles or so of wide open hills and valleys on my horse, with puppy Rain by my side, is a great way to open a new year.

Zomby Tech Support doesn't fail. We will prevail!

11. great!
You have eliminated the number one reason pop-ups even occur. It's a 1-2 punch. :hi:

5. Spybot and Panicware's Pop-Up Stopper
They work great for me. No hang up when Pop-up stopper stops a pop up. (Say that five times fast!)
