Seperate Car Crashes At Exactly The Same Spot Injur Both Dad & Son (3 Hours Apart)
<snip>

A Merrimac man traveling west on state Highway 78 near the Petro Travel Plaza rolled his car several times Wednesday night. His son, in a separate accident, was injured at exactly the same location less than three hours later.
"I've never seen anything like it," said Trooper Chris Splinter of the Wisconsin State Patrol.

Splinter said that at about 5:30 p.m., Lester C. Gaffney, 64, of Merrimac, took the curve on the road too fast and rolled his car several times. It came to rest against a telephone pole. The Portage Fire Department had to cut him out of the car.

Gaffney was intoxicated at the time of the accident, Splinter said. He suffered multiple injuries, including several to his head. He was taken by medical helicopter to the University of Wisconsin Hospital. His condition was not available late Wednesday.

Then, within an hour of the accident scene being cleared, Gaffney's son Dan A. Nutting, 39, of Portage, was injured at the same location.

Nutting was a passenger in a car driven by his wife, Marie K. Wilson, 46, of Portage. They were driving to Merrimac after hearing of Gaffney's accident with plans of heading to Madison, Splinter said.

The accident occurred at 7:55 p.m. Wilson was driving too fast and the car rolled over off the road "within three inches" of the Gaffney accident, Splinter said.

Nutting was taken to Divine Savior Healthcare with head injuries. His condition also was not available late Wednesday. Wilson was not injured. The car was severely damaged.

Wilson will face a speeding citation, Splinter said, and Gaffney will face charges for driving while intoxicated.

While Splinter said the stretch of road is not especially dangerous, "people just go too fast around the curve." It is a posted speed limit of 30 mph on the curve, he said.

All three involved in the accidents were wearing seatbelts, Splinter said.

1. Bizarre, but not impossible
The two events were not mutually exclusive.

The son was driving to the scene to check on his dad. Plus the son didn't crash, it was his wife - not sure if that would take away from the irony.

3. That happened here this past summer. Two brothers involved.
First one died in a motorcycle accident, second brother was speeding to the accident scene on his bike and crashed about 100 yards from the scene. He died too. Pretty sad.

6. My brother hit a guy with the same name
They freaked out a little bit when they swapped licenses.

Coincidences happen!
