Country Music
Does anyone else here like country music? I'm not nuts about the newer stuff, but I like a LOT of the older stuff (of which I count the songs recorded in the 80's, which I grew up on). Country music was the background soundtrack of my childhood. My Dad's been gone for 11 years now, but all I have to do to remember him clearly is to play anything by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, or Waylon Jennings.

1. I do
I love Johnny Cash. I listen to Little Big Town, Sugarland and a few others. I tend to listen to music in cycles. Right now I'm into my old southern rock phase.

10. I love Southern Rock!
My partner hates it, so out of respect I don't play it much when she's here, but that's another genre that I grew up with. My older cousin plays the guitar really well, and was in a southern-rock amateur band when I was young, and whenever he came to visit, we spent the entire evening with him playing and me singing. I miss that.

15. I often wonder whatever became of him.
My extended family is VERY large (my grandmother had 10 kids) and I lost touch with him shortly after my Dad's death. The last I heard, he was living somewhere in Montana. I've Googled him a lot, but nothing ever comes up.

My last memory of him was right before we lost Dad. He and I were out on the front deck--I was 15 years old, and he'd sneaked me a beer when my folks weren't looking. He was playing "Me and Bobby McGee" and I was singing my heart out, Janis Joplin style. We finished the song, he gave me a hug and told me he'd see me in a month or so. And I've never seen him again. :(

3. I like country music, especially the older stuff.
Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline are two of my favs. My dad has been gone for 30 years, but like you, if I listen to Johnny, I think of my dad. My dad played the guitar, and used to do a lot of Johnny's stuff.

51. I'm the same
Nothing makes me feel more like home than Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, the Highwaymen, Kris Kristofferson. When I get home (which isn't very often), my dad and I still lounge around the living room and marvel at the goodness of the music. I am not really into any newer country (unless Gillian Welch counts) but I don't think music can get much better than Johnny Cash. He transcends genres.

Don Williams, the Statlers, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, George Jones, and some of the other old greats.

I worked in country radio during the peak of the "hot country" craze in the early-mid 90s. I got sick of cookie cutter "hat acts" really quickly.

Still love classic country, but for god's sake I'm sick of "new country". Cheesy rewarmed pop songs. Michael Bolton with slide guitars. Yes, Rascal Flatts, I'm talking about your sorry asses here.

I won't link directly to the worst of his song, but this is a link to a page where you can find his lyrics. Search the page for the "N-word" slur against African Americans, and the song "F*ck Anita Bryant". The man is sick in the head, truly.

Older stuff: Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Hank Williams. In fact, "At Folsom Prison" is one of my favorite albums.

Alt-country: Uncle Tupelo is excellent, and I'm trying to branch out in this area, too.

Modern country: Dwight Yoakam.

14. When it's done right, it's quite good
99% of the country out there I can't stand, but I can't say I don't like it categorically by virtue of the existence of Neil Young and Johnny Cash. Also, some bands that aren't officially called country incorporate elements of country into their music which really enhances their sound. For example, Modest Mouse, Calexico, etc.

Same goes for hip-hop. it has potential, and even though I think the vast majority is garbage, there are a few artists who are damn good.

36. Yes, That Is A Good One
She makes his coffee, she makes his bed
She does the laundry, she keeps him fed
When she was twenty-one she wore her mother's lace
She said "forever" with a smile upon her face
She does the car-pool, she PTAs
Doctors and dentists, she drives all day
When she was twenty-nine she delivered number three
And every Christmas card showed a perfect family
Everything runs right on time, years of practice and design
Spit and polish till it shines. He thinks he'll keep her
Everything is so benign, safest place you'll ever find
God forbid you change your mind. He thinks he'll keep her
She packs his suitcase, she sits and waits
With no expression upon her face
When she was thirty-six she met him at their door
She said I'm sorry, I don't love you anymore
Everything runs right on time, years of practice and design
Spit and polish till it shines. He thinks he'll keep her
Everything is so benign, safest place you'll ever find
God forbid you change your mind. He thinks he'll keep her
For fifteen years she had a job and not one raise in pay
Now she's in the typing pool at minimum wage
Everything runs right on time, years of practice and design
Spit and polish till it shines. He thinks he'll keep her
Everything is so benign, safest place you'll ever find
At least until you change your mind. He thinks he'll keep her

35. I am more into Alt-country (or Americana or whatever it's called)
But I do like the old stuff. Merle Haggard can make me cry like no one else. "Sing Me Back Home" is just beautiful, as are a lot of his songs.

Now if you haven't heard of Robbie Fulks, you should try to find some of his stuff. Some of it is side-splittingly funny. "Fuck this Town"- apparently his did not have a good time in Nashville. But my favorite currently is "Countrier than thou"- all about the poseurs who currently inhabit country music (with also a dig at the current occupant of the White House).

"He has a ranch,
wears a Stetson/
He's a hip-shooting
ex-oil king/
Even talks like Buddy Ebsen/
But he's sitting in the West Wing"

like Waylon Jennings, Dwight Yoakham, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams (Sr. and III jr. sucks), Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, quite a few others. Most of your great country artists are people that the Nashville music establishment can't stand. Nashville wouldn't know great country if it smacked them in the face.

I also love Alt/Country like Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Whiskeytown, Caitlin Cary (especially the Begonias album with Thad Cockrell), The Jayhawks, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, and maybe my all time favorite band Drive-By Truckers

I'm listening to an old Keith Whitley album right now.

I was raised on country music. I remember many Saturdays spent with grandma watching the old country music shows. Whispering Bill Anderson, Ernest Tubbs, Buck Owens, Porter Wagoner with Dolly Parton. Plus others I probably forgot.

When I was a little older we watched The Mac Davis, Johnny Cash & Glen Campbell shows. The Johnny Cash show was my favorite. I still like him.

46. not the new stuff
I like Willie Nelson, the country influences on George Harrison's playing (he studied with Chet Atkins), and Ringo's versions of Carl Perkins' tunes like "Matchbox".

Johnny Cash was cool too. Nowadays I don't know why they all sing with a clothespin on their noses like they are whining and they commit pedal steel guitar abuse. Not to mention the depressing subject matter.

I thought Chet Atkins was fabulous, and I used to watch Hee Haw just to see Roy Clark. There's some old country music where they didn't whine (Patsy Cline). And the Everly Brothers were discovered by Chet Atkins. Phil and Don have done good stuff since they separated that has been absolutely ignored by the media. IMNSHO, Dolly Parton has a beautiful voice.

Now they all look to me like fake cowboys.

I can say the same thing about rock and rap and hip hop these days. It all baffles me. I must be a codger or something.

Sorry, no alt.country or Americana, but you will hear Cash, Cline, Loretta, Dolly, Merle, Buck Owens, Statler Bros, Waylon, Willie AND The Boys, with the occasional Hank Sr, Ray Price (think "Crazy Arms") and even Bob Wills:

The format was put together in Little Rock and is slowly growing in the US. Meanwhile, listeners in Germany, Scotland, England and Ireland are just apeshit crazy about it.

Johnny, Willy, Waylon et al. as well. Oh and Patsy Cline, wow.

The best country music today is being played by bored rock musicians anyway, but it gets labeled alt-country or is too much a part of the indie market to fall into that category.

I do admit that whenever I get the chance (I don't have cable) I watch CMT as if it were Comedy Central. Holy shit is it funny.
