Hawai`ian DU'ers: I need "Aloha" etiquette
Edited on Thu Dec-07-06 03:25 PM by Book Lover
One of my authors lives in Hawai`i and signs off every email with an "aloha." Is it OK for me to either open or close my emails to him using "aloha" too?

ON edit: I should note that I am from and live on the mainland, and my business email tone is always formal.

1. Yes, it is okay to do so
Though I would use it in the salutation, not in the closing.

Such as:

"Aloha Kalili,

blah blah business blah.

Sincerely,

Book Lover"

Though using it in the end wouldn't be bad, either, but it is a little more "local" than using it as a salutation.

Or you could end with "mahalo" if you want to say thank you, otr "mahalo nui loa" if you want to say "many thanks".

Or "You like beef?" if you want to fight him outside.

3. Go for it!
Noted malihini (stranger, visitor) Keith Olbermann often says it when closing his most excellent broadcasts.

For extra style points, try "Aloha no" (much aloha) or "Aloha pumehana" (warm, flowing aloha, like lava)

4. Thank you
I very much don't want to make a faux-pas. Thank you for your advice!
