TIME Mag's 100 Greatest Albums of All Time - NOT!!!!
I am so pissed. This "list" is a travesty. The 100 greatest albums of all time and what's missing? Dark Side of the Moon? Anything at all by the Allman Brothers, or Clapton/Cream/Derek & The Dominos, etc. Meanwhile, Run-DMC is ON the list! OASIS, fer cryin' out loud, is on the list! Hole -- on the list (take a moment and let that one sink in).

Here's the link:

http://www.time.com/time/2006/100albums/

What other travesties do you see, either by making "the list" or being left out? Meanwhile, I'm going to go shoot myself in the damn head!

6. Oasis invented rock music
In five years they will invent a time machine, go back to the 1800's when slaves were freed, and teach them the beginnings of blues. Then they will jump ahead to the 1950's and start opening up blues records stores in the South and in London, paving the way for rock-n-roll as we know it.

Once, I cut my finger and Noel Gallagher kissed it. It healed immediately.

15. Pretty Easy
Critics tend to not care for prog-rock very much. Sure, it sounds cool, but you don't hear very many players say that listening to "Elephant Talk" or "Long Distance Runaround," inspired them to pick up an instrument.

12. The Violent Femmes debut is a glaring omission
I don't know why that album rarely makes the "Best of" lists. Sure there's nothing that extraordinary about it from a musical standpoint but the attitude was a revelation. All the millions of kids who wondered why they couldn't get just one fuck now realized that others wondered the same thing.

I can't tell you how many times I was feeling awkward at a party humming some of the lyrics from this album to myself thinking: "This is exactly how I feel right now."

A couple years before Nirvana broke I realized that the musical times were about to change, when I heard this blasting from a Porsche.

But what the fuck does Time know anyway?

19. How do collections count as great albums?
Especially when they're from artists who have been dead for decades? Four of the 9 albums from the 2000s are from artists who are long departed. I know music in the 2000s sucks pretty hard, but come on!

Most of these lists have a high bullshit factor, but this one sets a new standard for crappiness.

This decade hasn't been the best for music but there is good stuff that could be honored. The White Stripes at the very least.

are now owned by Time Warner...

This list is bullshit...

But that's what happens when the list-makers are young enough to think Nirvana was original and think Rap is actually music.

25. Easily one of the dumbest lists I've ever seen.
The Essential Hank Williams Collection: Turn Back the Years
Portrait of a Legend 1951 - 1964
Elvis: 30 No. 1 Hits
The Anthology, 1947 - 1972
They call these from the 2000s. Yes the CD's were released in the 2000s but ALL of that music is from earlier eras.

As for Hole - "Live Through This" all I can say is OH PLEASE. There were many many albums better that that.

30. I Assume That's a Statement on the State of the Recording Industry
And I'd say it's a pretty accurate one.

Just about all of the albums on the list (that aren't rehashes) were in some way groundbreaking.

How many out there now are doing anything remotely trail-blazing?

26. The list doesn't start to get really horrible until the 80's and on
Forget about what records I'd have on the list; I'm stunned by some of the selections of the bands they included ("Document" over "Murmur"??) and what the fuck is Hole and Outkast doing on this?

Oh well, it's all subjective...

28. Not on the list, and should be:
1950's: Duke Ellington, Live at the Newport Jazz Festival, 1956

1960's: Captain Beefheart - "Trout Mask Replica"

1970's: Kraftwerk - "Trans-Europe Express"

David Bowie - "Low", "Heroes"

Joy Division - "Unknown Pleasures"

Television - "Marquee Moon"

1980's: Pixies - "Surfer Rosa"

Tom Waits - "Rain Dogs"

1990's: Massive Attack - "Blue Lines"

Liz Phair - "Exile In Guyville"

PJ Harvey - "Rid Of Me"

and probably a bunch of others I'm forgetting right now...

Edited on Tue Dec-05-06 09:36 AM by Crisco
Considering how everyone fell over it when it came out. It still holds up.

Rid of Me - too much controversy over Albini.
Exile in Guyville - rock critics still haven't forgiven Liz for making a pop album.

32. There are some gems on the list
They suck for leaving out Zappa, Beefheart, Skynyrd, Floyd, and the Allmans ("Live at the Fillmore East", anyone?). And from the 70's, they omit Dylan's best work.

At least they got SOME things right. But the anthologies do not fit. Most of them are really good, but not emblematic of the period.

Glad they recognized "Master of Puppets" and "Straight Outta Compton" on the 80's list. But it's Time magazine, which sucks ass anyway.

36. much better than rolling stone's lists
which seems to have the criteria of:

did jan wenner grow up on this band?
are members of the band personal friends of jan wenner?
did this band or artist peak prior to 1970?

if yes to any of these questions, then add to the list

41. There's a definite bias against psychedelic-prog rock.
I didn't expect to see Crimson or even Yes, but I did expect to see something other than a Beatles album on the list from the general quadrant of through-composed, full-sounding, psychedelicoid music. It's not that Pink Floyd isn't on the list; the list seems to give extra credit to "seminal albums". Dark Side of the Moon was a climactic album of its type. It's that neither a Pink Floyd album NOR Days of Future Passed NOR Brain Salad Surgery make the list. The weak links they make room for are multiple albums from Van Morrison and David Bowie, at least in the rock field.
