That Penquin Movie "Happy Feet" was so scary and racist we had to leave
Anyone have links to DU Discussion here about it? I hit search "Penquins" in archives for Lounge but didn't come up with anything.

Is it just us who walked out or did anyone else find it really offensive?

The movie really didn't make enough sense. It was a waste of $30 :sarcasm:

The Penquins are SCARY! They are creepy looking...even the Hero...and if I was under 12 seeing that movie and "sensitive" it would have creeped me out and given me nightmares for weeks.

And....I'm not a kid here on Du and have been through a lot to get "Mature," so I don't say this lightly....

27. I am a bit confused. (spoiler warning)
My kids didn't think the film was scary. I asked my oldest what she thought. She didn't care for the movie but the only thing she felt was frightening was the underwater bits. She is a bit phobic about large bodies of water. The other two were quite fond of the characters, not afraid. They are pretty sensitive, esp. my 7 yr old. That type of thing tends to be "eye of the beholder" territory.

They didn't see anything racist but i suspect if it was subtle or mature they might have missed it. I will be seeing this movie now. I want to see if there is anything i might have to discuss with them.

One thing they did say was that the film was sad because they picked on the main character for being "different". This ended up being a lesson in tolerance that ended positively. There was apparently distinct lesson about the environment and the danger of human activity. Again the lesson ended on a positive note.

Overall they came away with a positive feeling about the film.

Maybe if you sat through the whole thing you could decide (based on your own experience) whether or not to take others, rather than looking for DU to tell you why it is ok. If you don't want to, don't. I don't like much of these computer animated things, but see them occasionally.

8. ?? You're kidding, right?
All the reviews I've read have been favorable; the only people who've pannned it have been right-wing loons like Michael Medved, who didn't care for its messages -- that it's OK to be different and people are damaging the environment. I've NEVER heard anyone even suggest it's racist (quite the opposite), and I definitely intend to see it.

You're probably going to want to go into a little more detail regarding the allegedly racist content. How exactly is making them "hip-hop" making fun of them? Perhaps its meant to make them more appealing to youth? I haven't seen it (nor do I intend to, not exactly my kind of movie), but to assert it's racist without explaining exacty why is a little ridiculous.

The music leaned toward R&B with a little bit of rap and hip-hop tossed in on the side. But where were the religious services?
The mating rituals were pretty penguin-like, except for the music. Are you referring to the Barry White-type of character?

77. Accents in the movie...
The father character is Elvis. The old conservative penguins are Irish Catholic. The protagonist is a rich Hobbiton accent. The protagonists buddies have Argentinian accents (they're Adelie penguins, after all, pretty clever I thought). And the old guru Obi Wan character has some strange accent I can't remember or place, but I thought it was much more similar to the Argentinian accents than George Clinton, or as I've heard elsewhere, Barry White.

Classic "Footloose" plot.

There's an older movie (50's? early 60's?), same plot, with Irish catholic conservatives in that role which, I think, served as the direct reference to Happy Feet. Can't remember the name of it.

Saturday Night for top movie time and night...the crowd was very sparse and I saw no clapping or folks on their feet.

It might have been because I "walked out" in middle of movie. I guess you are saying "it got better towards the end." But, if that's true, then why were their so few "word of mouth" in the audience there with me?

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601088&sid=a6HHdjY0NdV4&refer=muse

Dec. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Warner Bros.' ``Happy Feet'' was the top-grossing film for a third straight weekend in U.S. and Canadian theaters, taking in $17.9 million in ticket sales.

The animated movie topped sales of $6.9 million for ``The Nativity Story,'' a new release about the first Christmas from New Line Cinema, which like Warner Bros. is a unit of Time Warner Inc., Exhibitor Relations Co. said today. Sony Corp.'s ``Casino Royale'' remained in second place at $15.6 million and Walt Disney Co.'s ``Déjà Vu'' was third again with $11 million.

I thought it was flawed in places, but good overall.

The "african-american" priest penguin you described was clearly supposed to be a George Clinton-type person. Is George Clinton racist?

George Clinton's great. Parliament's responsible for some of the greatest music of the 70s and is still inspiring music after thirty years. I highly recommend getting an album.

I'm also pretty sure he was the inspiration for Jim Henson's Dr. Teeth character.

35. George Clinton (the Muscian) was paid to sing in the movie..doubt his
political views came into play in his decision. It was "just a job."

So, why should that change my view of the Character who sung it and what I felt was "rascist" making fun of Black Churches and religion and a very dark scary movie for kids come into play because "George Clinton" sung in it?

40. NO. He didn't sing in the movie.
The character was MODELED after him.

I took 3 kids to the movie aged 5, 8, and 11. None of them were the slightest bit scared. If you had stayed until the end, you would have seen that the message was that we should embrace our differences and not let any one person tell us how we should behave or what we should feel.

Again, you have a right to your opinion, but this has to be the most "out-there" film criticism I've seen in some time. At least Medved stayed until the end and got the point.

You claim that the characters were caricatures of black preachers. The response was the character was modelled after George Clinton, a musician that is African American.

How is it not okay to be inclusive and to feature characters modeled after a variety of people?

The soundtrack that I remember was:

Elvis
Tom Jones
Queen
Frank Sinatra
Chaka Khan
The Beach Boys
a gregorian chant, which I guess could be gospelish, certainly not AA gospel
and some original scores.

So what movie were you watching?

50. For all intents and purposes, George Clinton IS a preacher.
He just doesn't preach your standard church sermon, that's all. :) I assure you, if the character you speak of was modeled on him, it's not meant to be racist in any way, but a loving tribute. As one Wikipedia entry states:

"Clinton, like scores of his contemporaries took African-American popular music (long concerned with issues of social, political and economic justice) to new levels of political outspokenness, public visibility and artistic accomplishment, tackling such complex subjects as the Vietnam War and the War on Drugs with intelligence and awareness."

The man's a legend. How is modeling a character after him racist?

44. Hahaha! Michael Medved & Glenn Beck say it's TOO LIBERAL.
Medved:

As in so many other recent films, there’s a subtext that appears to plead for endorsement of gay identity. Mumbles (the voice of Elijah Wood) displeases his parents and the leaders of his community because he’s born different, and makes an impassioned plea that he can’t possibly change – and they should accept him as he is.

http://michaelmedved.townhall.com/blog/g/5094f586-fed7-4cf4-872c-d20b94c78024

And . . .

On the November 20 edition of his CNN Headline News program, {conservative commentator} Glenn Beck said that Happy Feet, an animated film about a dancing Emperor penguin, is "propaganda" and an "animated version of An Inconvenient Truth."

"LIBERAL MEDIA!" The same damned scam they've been selling us for years.

It's a bit of "Oh Please Brer Rabbit don't throw me in that Briar Patch" with these folks. Don't go see Penquins because it's just "TOO LIBERAL" when this "Liberal" thought it was horrible racist steretyping.

Who's correct? I don't know but I enjoyed hearing opinions of fellow DU'ers who saw it even if I don't agree with them...I wanted to hear what they thought even if I countered or made an argument against what I saw differently from what they saw.

I'm not saying "DON'T GO SEE 'Happy Feet'" ...I'm saying BEWARE because this LIBERAL walked out....thinking it "Scary and Racist." Some folks here might want to know that view.

he does pretty much lampoon everyone - including African-American slang, but I've never heard anyone say that he is racist, even though he is a white comic. I know he does a character in the movie as well.

I haven't seen the movie yet (thankfully my 10 year old is almost at the end of his desire for animated films of that type), so I'll reserve judgment until I do see it.

Anyway, no mention of any racism except for one character (and his friends) who speaks with stereotypical latino accents.

I haven't seen it and really have to reason to. I will probably go see Casino Royale again:

Vesper: Am I going to have a problem with you Mr. Bond?
Bond: No, you're not my type.
Vepser: Intelligent?
Bond: Single.

You're quite vague about what it was about the movie that you felt was racist. You just keep saying that it "made fun of" religious services and that it was "racist and scary" without really clarifying why you felt it did. I haven't seen the movie - quite frankly, it looked like a yawner to me but I've heard a lot of positive reviews so this surprises me. I'd like to have something a little more concrete to ponder, however, than "scary, racist." That doesn't tell me a lot.

114. We certainly didn't find it scary
What is scary to one person can be amusing, fun or interesting to others. Some are scared of clowns, while others like them, or are amused by them.

My daughter is almost four years old, and she was clapping her hands and dancing to the music throughout the movie. I don't recall any scared children in the theater, and we were at a matinee. When we stopped in the grocery store on the way home, my daughter wanted to get the penguin yogurt they were selling. She has not had any penguin nightmares. The only time she’s had nightmares from watching something at the movies or on TV was when she watched an educational nature show and later woke up crying that she had seen a snake. That will teach me to let her watch educational TV!!

There is nothing in Happy Feet scariness-wise that is worse than your typical Disney movie. I mean, Bambi’s mom dies, the Lion King gets killed by his brother, Snow White gets poisoned, etc.

I saw the old penguin that kicked Mumbles out as more like an old Scotsman – the elder statesman among the elders of the “clan” of penguins. More like the elders in the town from “Footloose” than a black church. Youth rebelling against the ways of the elderly has been a staple of movies and television for almost as long as movies have been around. That it was a black church never crossed my mind, as the penguins sang pop tunes (their “heart songs”) and not gospel music.

And, how is it a parody of blackface when emperor penguins have black faces in real life?
