1. Two stand out

Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoft.de)

Spybot Search & Destroy (http://security.kolla.de)

Use them both - they each catch things the other doesn't.

2. I second both recommendations
Both are excellent products!

I could hardly believe the amount of spyware on my ex-wife's computer after her son, who was 18 at the time, used it for a summer.

4. Spyware
I could hardly believe the amount of spyware on my ex-wife's computer...

Tell me about it. It is just plain unbelievable how much crap gets installed without people even being aware of it. What's worse, the stuff accumulates and WILL eventually affect system performance, sometimes to the point of crashing the system and/or making it unusably slow.

Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D are now two of my top tools in my IT toolbox.

and Zone Alarm too. I just added Pest Control. That is really informative as to who the bugs are! I downloaded it yesterday.

You can get things quickly through Kim Komando:

On the left click Shareware...then Kim's Best Picks

Enjoy the relief.
