College grads, so you go off and spend $50,000 on that Bachelor of Science in Apparel and Textile Management...have you found a job even closely related to what you studied?

Since graduating, I have yet to hold a job for which I wasn't completely qualified before going to college. No employer I've encountered has shown a scintilla of interest in my education. Frankly, it was a huge waste of time, money, and effort.

I have a BA in English. And I was a technical writer. But not any more.

I have a BA in Biology (would be BS at most colleges). I have a job in quality assurance in the food industry. My education has proved useful in being able to learn new lab techniques quickly as well as knowing the correct names of most laboratory equipment, knowing how to use Excel for basic statistics, understanding the basics of food chemistry and microbiology, and have better reasoning abilities than most people there. Of course, I only took a third of my coursework in biology, which is a pretty general subject as it is. Sometimes, I wish that I would have majored in something more specific and job oriented like accounting or chemical engineering although I would have went to a different college. I really would like to do research. Most places that do research want people with graduate degrees even though I know how to do research. Since most graduate degrees are rather specific, I want to be more sure of what I want to do though than I am now.

I never really started a career. I just go from job to job.

Not related to my undergrad degree though, which was in religion/philosophy with a minor in Greek.

Or to my seminary degree, M.Div.

13. My field of study was goofing off...

...which I do during my workday as often as possible!

15. Trained as journalist

...and ended up in high tech as a QA test engineer. I now find myself out of work and perhaps returning to my old occupation. I'm one of the unemployed that are not reported in the unemployment stats as I haven't needed to use the benefit (yet).

My wife majored in sociology and now works as a web-based training designer and project manager.

So we're both not applying all that fancy book learnin' to our current jobs (well, her current job).

16. I trained as a physicist

and even did a couple of postdocs while running into that brick wall that separates those who get the
real jobs in science from the rest of us. So now I'm an electrical engineer, not too uncommon a
career path for someone of my background. A lot of the stuff I do is the same stuff I needed to be able to do to
get experiments to work, so there's some overlap. I have the occasional good day when I get to use
something that your typical BSEE wouldn't know and would have to look up.
