HUNTINGTON, N.Y. -- The plight of two puppies born with cleft palates is touching New Yorkers and people elsewhere.
An animal shelter on Long Island has received more than 35 calls from plastic surgeons, veterinarians and others willing to help the dogs, who cannot suckle.
The puppies were rescued from a New York City shelter by a worker from the Little Shelter Animal Adoption Center in Huntington, who didn't want to see them put to death because of their deformity.
The puppies, who have been named Merlin and Magic, are being fed from a tube.
The puppies must be at least 12 weeks old before surgery. A shelter spokeswoman said they'll each need at least three operations to fix their deformed palates. Then they will be put up for adoption.
