Newspaper Correction of the Year: simply asstonishing
Newspaper Correction of the Year:

"The Daily Evergreen would like to sincerely apologize for an injustice served to the Filipino-American, Spanish-speaking and Catholic communities on the front page of Thursday's Evergreen. The story 'Filipino-American history recognized' stated that the 'Nuestra Senora de Buena Esperanza,' the galleon on which the first Filipinos landed at Morro Bay, Calif., loosely translates to 'The Big Ass Spanish Boat.' It actually translates to 'Our Lady of Good Hope.' "

2. I remember reading this before.
The actual text was cut and pasted, unchanged, from (I believe) a Filipino college student's parody/satirical history web site. Not only is the translation wrong, but the reporter couldn't be arsed to get in touch with the author to authenticate the story, either. The reporter (I think I read it was a woman, when it happened) was lazy -- trusted the first web site she found that had any information, with out determining whether it was trustworthy or researched. Who the hell is that gullible?

4. Ahh...the perils of dummy text!
I've been there. Thankfully, nothing like that has ever run in my magazine (I edit a trade journal), but that would happen from time to time in my college paper. "Like, Community Senate platforms totally continue here, dude!"
