I found this site when I followed a link from salon.com as I was trying to keep track of your election results. I really thought the level of analysis on pretty much all the news websites was quite poor, especially when some detailed up-to-the-minute analysis of the senate races was so clearly newsworthy.

Something I have not yet been able to work out is where the votes came from. Did the Dubya/Rove Christian nutcase segment actually turn out and vote, or did they just stay home in disgust at the recent scandals? Was the balance of votes tipped by swinging voters ditching the GOP, or did we see a turnout of demcoratic voters who simply didn't show up to vote in 2004? Did voters actually drop the GOP or did they just get outvoted by fresh democrat voters? I think it matters quite a bit, exactly what happened. My hope, from an outsider's standpoint, is that the republican party will turn its back somewhat on the loony religious right (and on Dubya), and revert to being something like a small-government-all-for-the-rich party, where it actually has something vaguely rational to offer in public debate. Yesterday's result should give some good people, and there must be some of them, in the Republican party a chance to boot out a lot of ratbags.

It does seem to me that if the republicans want to be in serious contention in 2008, they need to divorce themselves from Bush and start setting up some serious and relatively moderate front-runners now. This will be more of a challenge for the Gore-Obama democrat ticket (I can dream can't I?) but wouldn't it be great if the '08 presidential contest was actually between a top quality democrat ticket and a genuinely solid republican ticket?

I guess that's all a bit off-topic! Well, three cheers for Rumsfeld's departure, anyway. Should be an interesting memoir.
