Who has seen the movie "Water", about widows in India at the
time of Ghandi? What a wonderful film. What a depressing film. It makes me think how our culture, our fears and our weak humanity bind us with so many conditions in this life, why then do people add to their suffering by refusing to choose the good when it is in their grasp? What is it in us that finds comfort in a cage of our own making?

The movie makes the Pretzel's America look like Paradise. In so many respects, it is.

2. I've never seen it, but I will stick to my tradition of responding to your posts.
So all I'm going to say is...

I'm drinking a Tanqueray & Tonic and it is good.

4. Lol. It's very much about the uselessness and cruelty
of tradition. I release you from your obligation, Haruka. Glad you're feeling well enough for a beverage. I was thinking of making myself something. I'll think for a few more minutes and then decide.

6. Go for it!
Aside from a stuffy nose (which is par for the course), I feel totally healthy today. This means, I am back to smoking and drinking.

3. I've Seen It
Remarkable film made by Canadian Deepa Mehta. I found it really moving. Mehta had many problems shooting the movie. People in India didn't want to the world to know of their questionable cultural practices and her movie was sabotaged on many occasions. She finally completed the film in Sri Lanka.

Glad you enjoyed the film. It's one that everyone should see.

5. I didn't watch the commentary, if that's where you got that info.
Interesting and of course, disturbing. We know well enough how difficult it is to tackle traditions that have their roots in religion. Gay marriage is one example. But, those women! My god, we are lucky to be living in the Western world.

7. saw it a few months ago
Thought it was powerful, sad, moving. When it was over, my husband and I just sat there, unable to move. Meanwhile, the people in front of us started laughing about how awful it was and how "next time *I* get to pick the movie." Sheesh. They were probably repugs.

8. I know a few Dems who have no taste in movies!
But I'm glad you liked it. My STBE husband and I had the same reaction, although I was sobbing and he was thoroughly angry as he always is when he is exposed to injustice of this sort. I don't want to see it again because it makes me so sad, but I'm glad for the one viewing.
