"The milkshake machine is not working right now." Lie.
Edited on Mon Oct-30-06 04:36 PM by Stevendsmith
The fact is, mister fast-food employee, that you've cleaned out the milkshake machine early so you don't have to do it after closing. But it's easier to tell me, the guy who wants a delicious milkshake -- instead of a soda -- with my meal, that the machine is not working.

For shame.

1. That's a Hardee's phenomenon on this end of the country;
is it a Carl's Jr one at that end?

17. Hardees around here make handdipped shakes
The machine that mixes the ice cream and milk is a simple switch. Cleaning it is wiping it down.

4. I had a Dominoe's tell me there were out of "extra cheese"
I had to explain to the guy that it wasn't a different KIND of cheese it was just more of the same. I don't think his English covered this concept.

7. "What was the bacteria count last inspection?" - This is the question to ask
Milkshake and frozen "dairy" products are one of a fast-food establishment's cash cows. Very, very little overhead, easy-to-store ingredients, very, very high mark up. They do NOT want these machines down - they lose money, money, money.

11. If that machine is "down" it might well have been shut down on purpose.
I spent way too many years in fast food to know you will kill to get that shake machine back online. The unit cost for those things is maybe, maybe 10 cents for the "ingredients" + cup and they charge about $2.00 or more retail these days?

If it's down, often someone from County Health made them shut it down.

9. Heh, thats one of my moms favorite stories. When she was a waitress, she would always tell the cops
that came in the the milkshake was broken, while really it was a pain in the ass to make them.

10. I knew it! What's so hard about making a milkshake?
Why is it harder than preparing food?

16. Waitressess don't have to make the food. They do have to make milkshakes though
so it is harder for them

14. Grrr.....
McDonalds does it all the time and I end up going from place to place so my DD isn't disappointed. She's mentally handicapped and honestly asks for very little. When she asks for ice cream or a milkshake, we get it for her. Pisses me off when I know that they are lying.

18. Do you not think that it is fair for the worker not to want to work on the machine...
after closing. Is your shake at 2 minutes to closing worth making them stay longer?

19. Yes, after all for minimum wage they should be happy to oblige
Okay, I know it's aggravating but it's also aggravating to be expected to do about ten jobs by yourself (which is what's expected at most of these places) for very little compensation. "Closing" generally consists of a whole checklist of chores and yes, sometimes it helps you get out on time when you do some of them a little early.

Tell me, if the guy had told you he'd already cleaned the machine and didn't want to make a milkshake, would you have accepted that any better?
