Magical.

9. Best feckin' place ever.
It was quite amusing how many times I was stopped by American tourists in Dublin asking me for directions.

AT: Excuse me, do you know where ------ is?
Me: I don't know. I've only been here two days.
AT: Oh, but you look Irish.
Me: I know, but I'm an American.
AT: Oh, so you don't know where it is?
Me: No.

I would love to go back and be able to spend a couple months there. I only spent 10 days in Ireland and I ended up meeting people in Dublin and spending more time there, than I wanted. Basically, I flew into Dublin solo with "Ireland on $60/day" and the hostel guide with no clue of what I was doing or where I was going. All I knew was that I was flying out of Shannon ten days later.

start my first real grown-up job.

It was an 11 day trip--London, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. Was a wonderful, memorable trip.

20. I drove my SAAB
Drivin' in my Saab
On my way to Ireland
It's been a long time
It's been a long time
Drivin' with my friends
On my way to Ireland
It's been a long time
It's been a long time

So when I was out
In the desert
And a cowboy
Tried to lasso me
He said your red
And made of clay
A virgin portrait
I let him wake me
But decided not to stay

Next in New York
I fell out with a dragon
Of the white collar kind
But just as ferocious
I remembered Macha
Running faster than the horses
Then an encounter with
A voice that caressed me

Wasn't it you who
Held off a surrender
To one spoiled nun
Who taught you the names
Of the mountains
On the moon
And then a Jesuit
Proceded to arrange your soul
While I prayed
On my knees

I love Tori Amos

21. Took a 2 week bicycle tour of Ireland
Edited on Wed Oct-25-06 08:12 AM by AllegroRondo
about 10 years ago.

I recommend bicycle touring just about any country in Europe, its an amazing way to go. You get to see everything, go at your own pace, meet plenty of locals, and get a good workout. And the roads there are much better suited to bicycle traffic than in the US.

But Ireland- wow. The people, the food, the Guinness, the history, the castles, the scenery, the sheep...
One thing they dont tell you in the travel brochures, Ireland is very green because it rains a lot. Dress accordingly.

23. ok - so next year, my wife is going to the Gallapogos
I have been thinking about going to Ireland during that time.

I would like a self-drive kinda "tour". Lots of pub time with good music. (I am a musician and have sat in on a couple of sessions - would like to experience that over there as well)

Anyone have any ideas?

24. Beautiful place, I enjoyed my time there. I remember when I was a kid,
I had a game called Nemo (Omen spelled backwards) ... Supposedly told you the future, or answered your quetions or something. It told me to go to Ireland for a peaceful vacation. I thought that was pretty funny at the time, considering all of the bombings that were being reported at that time.

Also, I must admit to a horrible "Ireland must go! So there!" copycat urge, but I'll ignore it.

It's a beautiful country, especially in the Southwest, County Kerry, around Killarney, IMHO, very green, and the people are the friendliest you'll find anywhere...:D

37. No, it's one I found, and it really doesn't do it justice.
It is just so green. You'll notice that, first thing, even before you land. Of course, that also means it rains a lot, LOL. And the others are right about the history. It's mind-boggling how old most things are, and people still live in these ancient houses. Don't expect to find too many thatched roofs, however. They are no longer for the poor, cost a fortune, now, and they're mainly for show. But they weren't very sanitary, anyway, full of bugs. x(

And the people really are very welcoming. Of course, tourism is their number one industry. Two bits of advice: keep an eye on your wallet and don't expect the Tinkers to let you take their picture, unless it's for a price...;)

Here's another of my favorite spots, the Cliffs of Moher. Don't expect a lot of guard rails, either, LOL, even at Blarney Castle, which is where you can kiss the Blarney Stone. It's not for acrophobics: you don't just go up and kiss a stone, but climb up these winding steep steps and when you kiss the stone, you have to lean backwards, with two guys hanging onto your feet, and you're hanging backwards, out over nothing...:scared: My father took my picture here, the last time I visited, and he kept asking me to back up... funny guy.:eyes:

29. i LOVED it there.
i spent a month in dublin -- cause i love the theatre -- they have the best there -- outside of london and new york.

the writers museum, the joyce museum, the national library, the gaol, while the national gallery is chaotic -- it is a revelation that such a smal country produced such wonderful artists, the museum of modern art -- small but very revealing.

i'm not much of a country boy -- but i did get out in the country some and it is gorgeous.

the people are very approachable and chatty so it's easy to get insider tips on things to do and see.

32. Many times.
Mostly in Dublin for business, but have always taken some time to see the sights too.

Great place and I really enjoyed it.

The Irish that I met are extremely friendly and want you to learn about and enjoy their country. I will say they also really live up to their reputations as hard drinkers. My staff in Dublin would take me out to drink until 2am, I'd be on the floor and they'd be going strong and then show up early in the office looking fine and ready to do it all again the next night.

36. Several times
The first time was when I was 13. My dad still had family living in Roscommon and we went to visit them. I got to see the house that my grandfather lived in before he emigrated to the US. My mom's mother's people came from Athlone in Meath. We visited there and mom went to the local church to look at their records. It was pouring rain, so I stayed in the hotel room and read.

Ireland truly is a beautiful country. I love the Shannon river valley and the Ring of Kerry. Next time we go, hopefully in a year or so (we want our daughter to be a little older - she is only 4 now) I would love to get to the Dingle Penninsula. The pictures I've seen of it show a stark and haunting landscape.
