It's official: Hollywood has run out of ideas
They're remaking "Revenge of the Nerds"!

http://www.killermovies.com/r/revengeofthenerds/articles/4419.html

That movie was barely watchable in its original incantation...this will be worse.

I can understand if they want to remake a good movie as another good movie.
It's almost understandable if they want to make a bad movie out of a good one.
And commendable if they want to make a good movie out of a bad one.

But to start with a movie that basically sucked, like Revenge of the Nerds, and produce something worse? They should just shoot the fucking thing on digital video because this shit's going straight to DVD and starting out digital will make life easier.

1. That's been official for a while now.
But as it relates to this:
"I can understand if they want to remake a good movie as another good movie."

I can't. Why remake it if it's already good?

To prove there are no inherently "good" movies.

6. Or because...
movie studios know that when the president (or Bush, in this case) is a Publican, people are broke enough that they won't take a chance on a movie they're not sure they'll like.

4. Maybe to get another "take" on the story?
The quickest example I can think of is Little Shop of Horrors.

I thought that movie was just dandy in its original incarnation--Jack Nicholson was in it. Good film. Then they turned it into a musical and took it to Broadway, and finally made a new movie out of it. That's also a good movie.

They tell me The Producers was the same way, although I haven't seen the new one.

Now...if you want an example of how to screw the pooch, look at The Poseidon Adventure. The original was a very fine piece of disaster cinema. The remake was just a disaster. Rollerball was the same way. As was King Kong--every time they remake it they fuck it up even worse. And let's not even start on War of the Fucking Worlds.

For (arguably) bad movies made good, look no farther than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was okay. It's a lot better if you have your remote handy and can fast-forward through songs like "Cheer Up Charlie" and the Oompa-Loompa numbers. (I really like "I've Got a Golden Ticket" and "Pure Imagination" and everyone likes "The Candy Man.") OTOH, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was fantastic.

Bad movies made worse? Gee...I'm waiting with bated breath for them to remake 8 Heads in a Duffel Bag.

7. geez, the first one was practically a remake of Animal House to begin with.
Still, I date the official death of imagination in Hollywood to the Ladykillers remake a couple of years back. When even the Coens are doing remakes, (and no, Miller's Crossing doesn't count)you know times are bad.
