The Dixie Highway

Anyone else live near The Dixie Highway?

I spent my youth living just a half a block from it, although it was usually referred to as 'Western Avenue' along that route. These days, I actually drive to my commuter station on part of it and at one point go under the Illinois Central RR tracks to get there.

Not far from where I live is the intersection of 'The Lincoln Highway' and 'The Dixie Highway' which at one time was considered the crossroads of the nation.

I guess that new Mellencamp song which references it is running around in my head way too much or something.

1. I grew up in Ohio and the Dixie Highway

ran through Lima, OH. Remember hearing ads for businesses that were on the Dixie Highway in Lima. Also drove on it to get to the mall there.

3. There are actually two branches.

The both start in Florida, but the eastern branch goes up through Ohio and into Michigan. The western branch goes up through Indiana and ends up in Chicago.

4. I live on old U.S. 41

That is, it was once 41 until they built the bypass around Terre Haute in the 1960's.

As for "Crossroads of America," the intersection of 41 (Dixie Highway) and 40 (National Road) in downtown Terre Haute gets to claim that title.

5. no, but this did inspire me to type "Hershey Highway" into google

image search, thinking I would make a copycat...but I was quickly disabused of this notion. May I just say it's probably a good idea to have "safe search" turned on if you are going to do this.
