Student fires gun in Mo. middle school
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061009/ap_on_re_us/missour...
JOPLIN, Mo. - A 13-year-old student fired an AK-47 into the ceiling at his middle school Monday morning after confronting a pair of students and administrators, telling them, "please don't make me do this," officials said.

No one was injured, and the boy was taken into custody.

The student was wearing a mask and pointed the assault rifle at Principal Steve Gilbreth and Assistant Superintendent Steve Doerr, Superintendent Jim Simpson said.

9. I'd be amazed if it actually WAS an AK-47.
From my (very) limited knowledge of rifles, there are a lot of cheap semi-auto knockoffs of the AK-47/other AK guns. Kid probably had one of those.

Real AK-47s (which can fire on full-auto) are extremely hard and expensive to get in the US, requiring a lot of permits and something like $8,000-15,000 in government fees.

10. 200 dollar Tax stamp to buy a full auto weapon.
If you can find one for sale prices range from 15,000 dollars and up. Any machine gun sold today must have been made before 1986 to be legal to transfer.

To the best of my knowledge, no crimes have ever been commited by anyone using a legal machinegun.

I think it's disgusting that this kid would have access to an ak-47 knockoff. As he is a minor, I am all for charging his parents for their lack of parenting skills. Parents need to wake the hell up.

16. In that part of the country
turning a semi into a full auto is a piece of cake, timmy mcveigh's old army of god buddies have their compound in the neighborhood, I hate to stereotype but that is the beltbuckle of the hardcore bible belt, the knuckle dragging bible belters.

18. he got it from his parent's gun-safe :(
in the original Yahoo News story:
(Police Lt.)Jones said the gun belonged to the boy's parents, who kept the weapon in a safe at home. The parents told police their son apparently knew the combination to the gun safe. (Police Officer)Farmer said it is not uncommon for people in the area to own assault weapons.

12. Wow....Joplin....that's scary...
I remember Joplin as a sleepy little town (I lived in Springfield for 12 years). Of course, Joplin did spawn the likes of Bonnie and Clyde......I think the James brothers used to hang out their frequently too didn't they?
