OK...I'm in DC...now what?
Actually make that Herndon, Virginia. I wish I had daytime here since there seems to be a ton of cool Civil War trails in the area...

But alas, only here for two days, and daytime I'm spending in classes and nights, well I hear DC isn't the greatest place to spend nights if you don't know where you're going.

3. Go to the White House, ring the doorbell and run away
Or order a pizza and send it there while you watch from down the street.

5. If you're in Herndon, go to Udvar-Hazy
We were there last year (no connection to Dulles; it's just where gf could get a fairly cheap room online) and we were rather taken with it. Aw, dammit, they're only open until 5:30: http://www.nasm.si.edu/visit/hours.cfm

Washington isn't as bad as its reputation, and you can always hang out in Georgetown and Old Town Alexandria if you want to feel extra safe. In both cases, you'll have to figure out the shuttle buses as well as the Metro, but it's not hard. Your hotel concierge can probably help but if not, this and this will: http://www.georgetowndc.com/shuttle.php
