After a six year relationship, how long should you wait before dating?

There's no set rule on this.

Personally, I think if you were the dumpER, it's polite to fake a "mourning period" of a month or two.

But if you're the dumpEE, you're entitled to all the hot tawdry comfort sex you can get. Just don't take any of it seriously until you're sane again.

but i wonder if it would be a good idea to recalibrate your identity. often enough, in long term relationships, the identities of the two people can merge in some ways, so you might need to get your bearings and have some "Cannikin time."

The reality: I think it was a week? Somebody wonderful was interested, and I was smart enough to jump on him before anybody else did.

I think what I'm saying is to pay attention to how you're feeling and to be flexible. Don't sideline yourself just because you think you should, but don't start seeing anybody until you feel whole again in yourself.
