I may be getting canned tomorrow. What do you think?
I was hired by this company as a temp through October 24th. They said it could be for longer or shorter. Then, I get a call from HR after work on Friday and the person said they want me to come in before work on Monday and fill out some form for a change in my status. They wouldn't tell me what the change was. So I figured they're giving me the boot. Am I being paranoid?

1. No.
You're just catastrophizing.

It might be something better, like it becoming a full time position.

2. who called you?
are you working through an agency?

or direct through firm?

usually, if they are letting you go, they do it without notice, unceremoniously, no forms required. you just get the phone call or voicemail telling you not to go back.

3. Be prepared for anything.

You may get the boot, or they may want to make you a "permanent" employee. Notice how I put the word permanent in quotation marks, since there is no such thing anymore. Good luck, either way! :hi:

4. HR from the company or the temp agency?
If it's from the company then there is no reason they'd ask you to fill out anything if they were going to get rid of you. They would just call the agency since technically you work for them. Maybe they want to hire you.

7. do you have key cards?
corporate i.d.'s? keys?

sounds like they might be processing you for a change of status in any event.

the best time, though, to fire somebody (per corporate security types) is 4 pm on a friday.

10. Well, it strikes me as strange that they would tell
you to come in to HR for a status change if they were going to fire you. I would think they would just fire you rather than keep you in suspense and not tell you why you have to come in. I hope it all turns out well for you.

11. I'm a pesimistic optimist
I prepare for the worst. Then, if it turns out better, I'm pleasantly surprised.

13. I'm like that too.
That way you are not so shocked when the worst happens but if something really good happens then you are thrilled. :)

Let us know what happens.

8. Thank you! I do too.
I've been "underemployed" for a year and a half. It's creating a lot of stress in our lives, as you can imagine.

12. Don't you love it when people screw with your mind?
"Hey, lets let him worry about this ALL WEEKEND!" I bet he would get a kick out of the uncertainty.

People have no common courtesy anymore, they seem to go out of their way to screw with people. I suspect that if they were going to fire you they would have done it Friday afternoon. I don't know why they would give a heads up about it though, I hope its good news for you though.

Please let us know on this thread what happens. (It will be easier to find that way).

14. I LOVE it. Here's a great one.
About three months ago I get a call from the doctors office. They left a message that said they wanted to discuss the results of a blood test I had done a week before. They left a message on my machine right as they were closing for the weekend. So I had to worry over the weekend that they found something major wrong with me. On Monday they apologized and said the test results were perfect. Nice eh?

26. The company I work for now
I only worked for them for a month and then I was hired. It could be something good. I am hoping that it is. If they were going to fire you, they would just tell you over the phone.

23. "Canned" is better than 'caned,' I suppose...
It's hard to tell, I've been in situations where I was going to be offered a job, but no one could tell me until the official scheduled moment, so this could be positive. I'm a bit pessimistic, however - I think you'd have gotten a hint if something good was in the works, so I'd bet it's either bad news or perhaps some totally innocuous bit of paperwork.

You might want to stop by your desk on the way in and pick up any valuables, in case they shuffle you out the back door...

Good luck!

28. False alarm
So I go over the the HR building, wait 45 minutes, and they tell me they messed up. I didn't need to sign anything and my status hasn't changed. I'm still here until October 24th. If only they told me that on Friday!
