1. Margerine?
You're better off using olive oil.

3. I thought the trans fats in margarine were
worse for you than the fats found in butter.

Maybe the doctor owns stock in some margarine company.

5. Margarine is worse for you than real butter
As per my mom's cardiologist and my cardiology nurse sister.

Plus, the taste sucks.

7. Try some earth balance
I wasn't sure if I could manage the switch from real butter, but this stuff is great and it's got no transfats or other nastiness.

8. You're better off using lard and olive oil
Margerine is bad, bad for you because of the trans fats. Your Doc's info is very out of date on that subject.

Lard btw, even though it is a sat fat, is somewhere in the middle between sat fats and olive oil.

I can't believe any competent health official would actually recommend eating that crap.
You can continue to eat your butter..just make it into ghee, which is much better.
Here's a great article on it:

14. I'm sorry...
but if someone spends almost a decade in school to get a medical degree and then spends umpteen years practicing medicine, going to continuing education, and reading medical journals... I'll take their advice almost without question.

15. In general I'd agree with you...
but not all doctors work to keep on top of the latest advances either. Doesn't hurt to question (or at least research) ANY advice the doc gives you...after all it's your health.

22. Well, apparently this doctor isn't keeping up to date because it's
pretty much accepted common knowledge at this point that the trans fats in margarine are worse than the cholesterol in butter for you.

So, Matcom should question this doctor.

It's made with yogurt and tastes close to butter.

Keep in mind that most doctors know very little about nutrition. They learn to treat diseases. That doesn't mean they can adivse you on what to eat. Use olive oil or butter instead. Your body knows what to do with it because it is real.

19. Your doc needs to go back to school. Use olive oil.
A really good quality olive oil in most things, and a bit of real butter now and again where culinarily necessary. Margarine will ravage your health quicker than an all butter diet. It's the transfats. They'll get you every time.

23. Policosinol (sp?) really works well for lowering cholesterol.
You'll find it in the supplement dept of a health food store. I know that would be a scary place for you to enter, but it's just a little pill and it will help you out.
